Oil blow by or what
New to wooden boats ,I have a 64 CC custom ski boat with a 283 engine.Last year was having oil coming out of filler tube at about 2500 rpm. So came to conclusion engine was tired time for rebuild, over winter pull it apart new pistons 20 over, new heads , all gaskets .Put it all together runs fine still oil coming out at 2500 rpms did I miss something ?
Re: Oil blow by or what
I don't want to over simplify here, but the oil level isn't too high, is it?
Maybe try running it half way between marks on the dip stick and see what it does.

Re: Oil blow by or what
Did you replace the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve? Does it have one?

Re: Oil blow by or what
The oil level was one of my thoughts. The angle that the engine sits at makes it seem like the oil just doesnt get back down to the crankcase fast enough. The filler tube is right at the lowest point on the engine when crusing . I will give it a try.
Re: Oil blow by or what
The PCV valve is not in typical location on covers . There is a tube that run from back of carb into crankcase could this be it?
Re: Oil blow by or what
the pcv valve can be taken apart and cleaned. take it off then grab the 2 hex ends with wrenches and unscrew them. Pay attention to how it comes apart so you can put it back correctly. also check and make sure the crankcase vent screen is clean. Its the piece the pcv valve tube goes to. Also the filler tube is aluminum and has baffles in it and is suppose to be in a certain position. Take a picture looking down the filler tube and I'll compare it to an engine at the shop to see if its correct.

Re: Oil blow by or what
This is the other possibility: The 283F used a later cast iron manifold that has an exhaust baffle that runs underneath the carburetor. If you pull the intake manifold, there is a heat shield over that baffle. Usually they are riveted, and you have to drill the rivets out, but you can replace them with small ss sheet metal screws. Once you take the heat shield off, you will see your problem: The baffle wall is rotted through, and it's allowing exhaust to be blown into the oil gallery, and then out the ventilation tube. It also positively pressurizes the crankcase and oil gallery, and at higher rpm, you may get the result you have, although usually the exhaust fumes are enough to tell you. These manifolds are becoming a little harder to find, but if you find a good cast iron welder, they can repair the manifold for you.
.
This is a pretty common problem with 283F and 327F
If you get a chance to buy the correct manifold as a spare, jump on it.

Re: Oil blow by or what
Is there a casting number on that manifold? I have a spare that might fit if this is the problem.

Re: Oil blow by or what
Jim the piece that come off the back of the carb with hex nut ends is this the pcv value . Should there be something inside this I do not recall when I had it off ? Maybe a valve? As for the filler tube the baffle seam to look in the wrong position, so I fab an extension and put 2 baffles and off set them .
Re: Oil blow by or what
Peter this sounds like it could be it just need to check it out . Can the exhaust baffle that cross over just be blanked off so exhaust does go through.

Re: Oil blow by or what
Yep, it can be, but as I've said, it can be fixed by a welder who can braze cast iron. I had one fixed ten years ago, and it is still in service.
Re: Oil blow by or what
ok will check it out thanks.
Re: Oil blow by or what
I will check for a casting number on manifold .Thanks
Re: Oil blow by or what
There should be a spring and a small valve inside it. If you shake it back and forth you should here it rattle inside. Which model 283 do you have flywheel forward or the F series.chuck64 wrote:Jim the piece that come off the back of the carb with hex nut ends is this the pcv value . Re: Oil blow by or what
Jim its flywheel forward and I dont remember there being anything inside. Will have to double check any ideas where to get replacement?
Re: Oil blow by or what
You can't get new ones. Try jim staib. He might have one. Which intake manifold do you have the cast iron or aluminum one?
Re: Oil blow by or what
Jim its the cast iron one.
Re: Oil blow by or what
Peter that was the problem ,pulled intake blanked off exhaust . Running good as new will deal with welding it up in the fall . Thks again.
Re: Oil blow by or what
I have several good used ones for the 283. Send me a PM if you want one. Jim

Re: Oil blow by or what
That one is for the F series flywheel aft motor. The flywheel forward ones are a little bit different.quitchabitchin wrote:Does it look like this?

Good, glad you're up and running again. If Jim has a decent used one, buy it, and get the old one fixed. I remember when I bought Vanora 12 years ago and confronted a cracked block, I thought, oh well, it's a 283, they're as common as can be.....Umm, yes except the last new one was used in a Chev truck I believe, in 1968. Time flies.
