Hi All,
I'm new to the Chris Craft Club. I have a 1956 17' Sportsman. I am trying to drop the rudder, but I can't release the steering arm from the rudder post. I assume there is a bolt that closes the arm around the rudder post. If in fact it is a bolt with a nut on the end, I will cut the bolt if necessary. I just want to be sure the bolt doesn't thread into the steering arm before I take drastic measures. Here is a picture.
Thanks,
Greg

The vertical square that you see inside the clamp is actually the top of the rudder post. It is not threaded into anything.
Loosen the horizontal bolt and nut that is squeezing the clamp and then also loosen the large stuffing box nuts. Inside the stuffing box there is packing which may be stuck to the rudder shaft so it may take some amount of force to pull the rudder down but should be much easier once you loosen the clamp and stuffing box.
I don't have any good photos of the rudder by itself or I would post one.
Good luck.

Thanks. I was referring to the horizontal bolt when i asked if it was threaded into the arm or if it was just a through bolt with a nut. I could not loosen the bolt so I had to cut it and drill it out. Still working on it.

Right, as Mark said, it is not threaded.

Thanks guys. The bolt was steel with highly corroded had and nut. I cut the head and nut off and had to drill it out. Not fun!
