Where to start

Post by Rdwalker » Sun Oct 22, 2023 7:54 am

I’ve had bass boats all my life but am new to the wood boats. Recently I purchased a 1965 21’ Chris craft super sport. Picture attached. A couple questions.
1) I’ve seen posts about using 80 grit on the whole boat to strip the stain. Should I use a high grit to smooth the wood before staining?
2) which stain is recommended? I know oil base for sure, but is there a specific brand everyone uses that seems to stand better?
3) there are a few cracks (seams) on the top, side and transom area. Looks like it was caulked in a previous restoration. I’ve read not to use caulk but can’t find suggestions on what to use.
4) there is a small hole in the front where the previous owner loaded it on the trailer poorly, what product should we use to fill that properly?
5) after sanding, staining, patching, what sealer/varnish is best?

Any links with videos or more info is absolutely welcome! We are here to learn.
Thank you in advance for any advice!

Any chance you have the bow pole for that boat? If so could you post a photo of the mechanism that holds it in the light please.
