Vinyl Deck Cover???!!!

Post by clemxd » Fri Sep 26, 2014 5:53 am

Hi everybody,

my 1965 cc 36 cavalier's deck is covered with vinyl. this should be the original cover. But i have to restorate it now because it s dirty and have some leaks. What should i do? Remove it and varnish the deck, or should i replace it with vinyl deckcover. Where do i get vinyl?

Thanks

Clemens

Under the vinyl is plywood. Once you peel the vinyl off you'll find a few surprises that need repair. You won't be able to get a nice finish without some kind of covering like vinyl. Some `like to cover the deck with a layer of fiberglass. It will make a good finish if done well but fiberglass tends to catch water underneath and then the rot sets in. Deck vinyl decking is harder to do but tends to be a better covering for longevity.

The material is Nautolex Vinyl Decking (cabin topping). It used to be readily available but has become somewhat scarce. Do9 a Google search.

Would be good for someone to run down all options for replacing nautalex......I seem to recall that a while back some guys recommended a vinyl material that was used for tonneau (spelling??) covers on pickups and the like???

Try LeBaron Bonney. They specialize in antique auto upholstery and tops. They carry vinyl.

NO, as deep into that site I went...sounds like it is not deck material but lighter weight upholstery fabric .......I really think all nautolex, cabin top and decking....is no more. would like to hear otherwise.....but think it is all gone.
