Just bought a 1962 Holiday

I'm a bit of a newbie at this. I've restored lots of cars, but I don't know where to look on this. The boat has been sitting in a barn for 11 years. Hull holds water, cosmetics and varnish are great. I've cleaned the gas tank and put fresh non-ethanol in it. Changed the oil. Previous owner took out the points and rotor. Dist cap looks new. Wires are good. How do I find what rotor and points I need and where is the best place to get them? The motor is a 283. It turns over with the starter and has even compression. Aft flywheel. Also, what else should I do before I start it, other than obviously, checking fuel delivery? Thanks in advance. Ken

New spark plugs, fresh oil, new water pump impellers unless they are the brass gear type. Make sure all of the water drains on the engine and manifolds are closed.

The carb may or may not need cleaning, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try it.

Make sure it is getting cooling water somehow before you try to start. You can feed the inlet under the hull with a hose and plunger setup, connect the water inlet to a bucket (what I do) or put the boat in the water at a not so busy ramp.

As for the ignition parts, check your distributor for make and model before buying anything as it may not be original after over 50 years. The aft flywheel in 1962 may or may not be correct but I am surprised to hear it wasn't fly wheel forward. My 1962 283 was flywheel forward and I am not sure what year they started the flywheel aft installs.

Thanks. I was wrong about the flywheel. It is forward. I'm pretty sure it's all original. Is there a parts supplier that's preferred and will work with me on this boat? Who does everyone use?

The points and rotor shouldn't be anything special. For other parts there are some great suppliers who are club members and supporters. It all depends on what you need.

BTW, if the varnish is 10 years old, I would suggest a top coat before spring to renew the UV blocking layer. It is much cheaper and easier to add a refresher coat than to strip and refinish.

Ken, you should be able to get all the ignition parts at West Marine. Here are the number I use for my flywheel forward 283 engine:

Distributor Cap: Sierra #18-5369
Rotor: Sierra #18-5407

I have a Pertronix electronic ignition setup so I don't have distributor points. But with the above numbers they should be able to get you the correct points. Take your distributor number with you. If you have a spin on oil filter the part number is Sierra #18-7876.

Don, I'm in South Florida. Boca Raton. But, I bought the boat to run at my vacation home up in Old Town, FL on the Suwannee River. Only gonna run her in freshwater.

I do apologize for posting on this 10 year old thread but in case anyone was wondering about this boat I now own it .
I did not purchase it from the OP . He must have sold it to the gentleman I bought it from ..
It was left outside for a good while but I currently have it in my garage and I am doing a total restoration on it .
I have the motor out and being refurbished now and I am in the middle of repairing a few frames getting ready for a new 5200 bottom ..
Again I apologize for bringing this thread up but at least she is getting a new lease on life now !
I hope it turns out nice !
