Plank ID
Not sure how important this is but what is the terminology for this vertical plank that runs fore/aft. See white arrow. I'll be working on these for a while so I want to call them something that sounds correct.

I think that would be the coaming but I have been wrong before!

Re: Plank ID
Coaming would be right.

Re: Plank ID
Of course!
My late brother and I bought this in 2015, he past that year. I started this project in 2019 after I retired by myself in memory of my brother John. When we bought the boat it had a new cold molded bottom. I removed everything else that I could including the stringers and now working on getting the sheer battens made and installed. Then on to the coambing boards. It's a big job for me alone but I got this...

Re: Plank ID
Very ambitious. Keep us posted. Someday I may retire and be able to take on such a worthy project.

Re: Plank ID
Those coaming boards run the entire length of the boat. 20’!!!!

Re: Plank ID
Don't be surprised if you have to steam bend the forward part of the sheer batten to get it to lay right. I had to on my 24' Chris.
Compound bend and twist.

Re: Plank ID
Tom, I have been concerned with that. I don't have a steam generator on hand. What did you use to steam your batten? Did you steam the front half only? Would like to see some photos of a steam generator.

Re: Plank ID
Jim,
I will give everyone a good laugh. Years of camping taught me that a propane camp stove boils water really fast.
A two burner propane camp stove with a large turkey roasting pan covers both burners. I cut a hole the the lid of the roasting pan (know one uses the lid) at least that is what I told my wife, plumed into your steam box. Don't use PVC pipe at about 200 F it starts to go back to a liquid (Yea I tried that) . Form board with duct tape worked only a little better (not much). I have so few pieces to steam bend I did not want to go the expensive route. This worked for me.

Re: Plank ID
Don't take apart your boat too far, it may loose its shape. I'd put the original deck framing back in to make sure your top sides (hull sides) are not bellying (widening out beyond original dimensions). Then put some cross bracing from sheer on one side to the chine on the opposite side. And do the opposite from starboard side. Put some bracing from sheer to sheer to temporarily replace the deck framing about a 1/3 of the way back from bow and similar distance up from stern. This should help hold the shape while you fit and fair new battens and the planking. Just my $.02.

Re: Plank ID
Now I see what you mean. I think I'll try the insulated sleeve method and see if I can just do the forward third of the batten.Tom Gruenauer wrote: ↑Mon Sep 07, 2020 8:48 amDon't be surprised if you have to steam bend the forward part of the sheer batten to get it to lay right. Here are some photos:
PVC and camp stove and turkey roaster forward 1/3
Insulated foam with duct tape with clam/corn steamer for the transom planks 12" plus in width.
Both got the internal temp over 212F

And to think this all started by just trying to figure out the correct nomenclature for a board.
