Re: Q intake conversion project to standard GM style !

Jim you are correct, i was using relative terms, and the F is taller than the Q but is still a fairly compact design. I have an early 283 style, 327F, and 327Q in the family so i can confirm numbers and clearances if needed. Here is something of interest on the performance side, not totally applicab...

Re: Q intake conversion project to standard GM style !

Hey GREAT FEEDBACK and insight ! Thanks guys. That's what collaboration is all about :-) First the clearance issue. Chris-Craft was obsessed with making a compact motor, with good reason and they did their job well. From a performance point of view they did it too well, because the performance is co...

Re: Q intake conversion project to standard GM style !

Hey thanks for the good words, I agree it will help a lot of people and that's why we're doing it. I have already had 27 people in Europe express interest, not sure how many here in the US but rest assured, there are a lot of these motors out there. My main question right now that has yet to be answ...

Q intake conversion project to standard GM style !

Hi guys, We have a couple of guys who have done this and I am starting a challenge to do a "how to" pictorial thread showing all the parts and pieces necessary to make this swap. I think it will help untold ownes of the Q motors because right now if you have one (or in the case of cruiser owners, tw...

Re: 427 400hp dual quads

Thank you for the update on the engine build. From memory, which seems to be more and more dangerous as time passes, I heard the 427 Century boats came "without warranty". This particular dual quad may have come from "Interceptor", or may have been an Interceptor motor someone along the line (perhap...

Okay guys I have an opinion on the motor box thing and I am "compelled" to share it with you, lol. My advice..........LOSE THE INSULATION. Update................as of August 2014, the boat has been sold to a person in Michigan, and I recently saw it for sale at $8000. For anyone looking for a PREMIUM fiberglass model to spend time and money on, THIS was a good deal at the original asking price for sure, because it came on a trailer. Ye...

Re: 283 with 5 people and 3 lg dogs aboard

Seems pretty simple from here, a 283 with all that weight is NOT going to have the power to do what it can with only two aboard. Even with my 38 Commander Express with twin 427s and 2.5 gear reduction and 438 footpounds of torque per engine, when I have a load of beef on the aft deck, the thing want...

Re: 58 Connie Fuel starvation Problem

With old boats we can experience more than one issue simultaneously. If the siphon tube happens to be getting slowly clogged as more and more fuel is run through it, it can starve out the engine and create more suction on the fuel pump, which could find a place in the line that would admit air bubbl...

Re: 283 intake manifold gets hot!

Intake manifold clarification on the 327F series. The base GM 327 for automotive use was rated at either 250 or 300 hp. The 250 had a Rochester 4-jet carb and an intake for that carb, single exhaust, 4500 - 4800 rpm and smaller exhaust manifold. The 300 had the 3844459 intake manifold so it could us...

Spread the word.........this is a premium model and perfect for someone to go through. If I didn't have two projects unfinished now it would be sitting in my driveway. The next best thing to a barn find when it comes to fiberglass, and even though it is in Montana, the Uship.com concept would get it...

Update, June 24, 2014 Thankfully this boat has been sold to someone who is going to fully restore it. Hi guys, This one needs to be saved. Hey I just now saw this thread and now I understand. We're talking about aluminum exhaust logs here and yes I do have an opinion ! This style of log is a one way deal. Okay small block guys, what is a 350-15 engine ???

Hi guys, My friend, Mark, just acquired a nice 23 Lancer that has been sitting up for 5 to 6 years and it has a motor that is causing some speculation. The hull card (attached) calls it a 350-15 when it appears other hull cards of the era would call out the 350Q that we think was the stock standard ...

Hi Peter, Got a question for you on the 430 version of the big MEL. What carb did Chris-Craft use for their 430 Lincoln application (in runabouts)?? I would think it was the same Carter 625-cfm AFB they used for the 427 in 1966, but need to know specifically. Anyone out there know for sure ?? regard...

Jim, thanks for the note. I understand you do your build coats prior to deck seams. Do you do any varnish over top of the sealant application at the seams, or do you apply the paint wheel directly on top of the sealant ?

Re: 427 400hp dual quads

As a vestige of the rope seal era, the 427 (and 390) crankshafts have embossed markings located at the seal area, and these are directional, intended to "wipe" oil back into the motor when the crankshaft is spinning. These continue to work if the rope seals are replaced with neoprene seals. When tak...

One thing about the 283, a lot of them were made, and many more were made that go together identically to the 283 with minor (and dimensional) variation. Something like a hundred million SBC motors were made and all off them have needed some sort of service so there is a very big famaliarity factor ...

If the larger throw 428 crank was used in the larger bore 427 block, it would/could not have been sold as a 427. All the best with the rebuild. How sbout some pics? Top or side oiler? All the best w the rebuild. What cylinder heads do you have?
