Re: M Engine Fuel Bowl Gasket
tightening the bail nut on the fuel bowl too much can distort the sealing surface of the fuel pump, making it difficult for even a new gasket to seal.

Tony, are you asking for things to look for as the engine is being disassembled? I'm not sure that there is anything that could cause the problem that could be fixed without removing the oil pan.

Is there a diagnostic procedure that would identify the problem before disassembling the bottom end of the engine? Maybe remove the oil pan access panel, spin the oil pump with a primer tool, and look for oil flow or swirling oil?

Re: amp gauge and shunt
Great information. Thank you. I suspect the gauge was restored using a standard amp gauge mechanism.

amp gauge and shunt
Is the amp gauge used with the large shunt so common on 1960's Chris Crafts different than a garden variety amp gauge? Have an amp/oil pressure combo gauge that doesn't seem to work. VOM shows 14 volts when running so I think the alternator is working, but the amp gauge shows nothing.

Re: Fuel Filter/Cannister?
Do yourself a favor and rebuild the fuel pump, add an external filter, and make sure the fuel tank isn't going to contribute even more problems from rust, debris, sludge, leaks etc. Don't over-tighten the nut on the bottom of the fuel pump sediment bowl. Instead of fixing or preventing a leak you'll...

Re: prop direction wall of confusion
We know which direction the flywheel turns. We know the trans selector lever is correct. We know the prop is a lefty. Do we know the position of the Velvet Drive pump? Does it even matter in this situation? Hard to visualize how a CW engine can spin a CCW prop efficiently enough to get ~30 mph. Ther...

Re: Torque that manifold
Socket head cap screws aren't original but they can solve access problems sometimes. I'd rather have the 'wrong' bolt than the wrong torque or a leak.

Engine oil pump hose
Here's another tuition payment at the School of Hard Knocks. Did not test the mesh-covered oil line that connects the oil pump to the oil pump screen when rebuilding an MCL. After assembly the engine didn't have oil pressure. Removed the oil pan and found that the hose was defective. Apparently the ...

auxiliary frame attachment
I'm replacing the bottom on a '58 Chris Craft Continental 21' - the one with the fins. This boat's auxiliary frames are not attached with a large screw through the chine and into the end grain of the frame like the other Chris Crafts I've seen. This boat uses horseshoe-shaped pieces of plywood screw...

Here's what I needed to do on my early 1960's 283 flywheel forward engine. #1 cylinder is the port, most forward one - near the flywheel. Can you see a timing mark (probably a drilled dimple) on the flywheel through the timing slot on the front mount? If so, then install the distributor so that the ...

Stop the hole saw from wandering by drilling a 1/2" hole in a small piece of plywood, centering the plywood hole over the stubborn screw, and lightly tacking the plywood in place with a couple of finishing nails. No need to drive the nails flush, just stick them enough to keep the plywood from movin...
