Looks like a good time to revive this thread also. Anyone know the proper boot stripe width and color for a 1947-54 U18??

Re: 1949 sportman boarding/swim platform
Hey guys, just wanted to revive this thread in case anyone has any more info on this subject? I have an 18' Sportsman I'd like to add a removable swim platform to and I'm trying to figure out my options. My first thought was just two main anchor points to bolt through the transom, and eventually if ...

Re: Making new Toe Rails 1949 u22
I had to make new toerails for my 1950 U18. Wasn't any fun and spent more time thinking about it than it took to execute like most of the rest of the boat. But basically all I did was make some very rough shape patterns off the old rotten ones I took off, laminated some thick pieces to cut the flat ...

Re: Different varnishes on same boat?
I only ended up doing one coat of Epifanes over my previously scuffed base of 6 coats Captains Saturday. The weather was not cooperating with me Sunday to do a second round. But all signs point to the adhesion and cure of the Epifanes do be progressing just fine as you'd expect. Nothing strange pres...

Different varnishes on same boat?
Hey guys, I'm sure someone has done this before, just curious of any red flags that may make me steer clear. Basically I've done 6 coats of Captains 1015 on my boat, and have ordered more that hasn't come in yet, and I want to do two more coats this weekend. I have some Epifanes in my shop that I've...

Re: Deck Striping
Okay, perfect. Just curious though, any reason not to use white sikaflex? Instead of the mahogany. I just figured the white underneath would serve as somewhat of a fail-safe in the event of some issue with the striping on top. But that’s just pure speculation on my part

Re: Deck Striping
So I’m in the process of varnishing my U18. I plan on doing 20 coats of varnish, with sikaflex in the deck grooves, then pinstriping over them after varnishing. My question is, at what stage in the varnishing is the best time to sikaflex the grooves? Between coats 17-18, or sooner, or later??

1947-54 U18 Rudder
Anyone know if there's another rudder that will work for a 1950 U18? I know the original part number I need is Rudder #849, but haven't had much luck finding one. So I was just checking if there's another model close enough to use in its place? Or if anyone knows where I can find a #849 or a reprodu...

Scuff sand CPES before varnish?
So I have my boat stained and sealed with CPES, now as I wait on that to cure, I'm trying to clear things up before varnish. 1. Am I supposed to scuff sand the cured CPES before I apply the first coat of varnish? Or just wipe with tack cloth or a rag with some solvent? 2. Once varnish starts going o...

CPES vs. Interlux 1026 sealer
I'm sure there will be varying opinions on this, but what is the safest route to take to seal after staining? I had no hesitations in mind about applying CPES onto the stain as a sealer until I heard some stories of it occasionally seeping below the stain and causing somewhat of a bubbling effect. A...

Re: 1950 U18 rub rail trim
Understandable. The main issue I have at the moment is locating the correct trim in the first place. I also have an industrial supplier locally that I may be able to order the correct stock through to make the trim out of if necessary. I've seen many different shapes/sizes on the different CC models...

1950 U18 rub rail trim
Anyone have a source for the stainless/chrome rub rail trim for an 18' Sportsman? Or at least a picture reference that I could try to get some to match? Also, if there is some known supplier, I will also need the chrome spray rail trim and the thin wide pieces that run from the rub rail down to the ...

1950 U18 front seat framing
Hi there, anyone have the measurement between the top and bottom width of the step-through of the front seat of a 1947-54 U18? Or at least a picture reference? I cut out new frames to match the old rotten ones I’ve taken out, but it appears that they angle inward toward the top and wider at the base...

No I'm not sure. I haven't contacted the Mariners Museum since they opened back up to get the hull card. It is hull number V-18-815 though according to the paperwork I got. Which the V seemed odd to me, but I guess I need to get in touch with the museum V means its a Caviler. They were Chris Crafts...

Graymarine 120 conversion
So, turns out the 1950 18 Chris-Craft Utility project I bought came with a 1956 Graymarine 120 sitting in the engine hole but no attempt had ever been made to hook it up. Currently working on getting the engine to run, which has proven to be pretty difficult because I cant seem to find any info at a...

Stain color opinion?
Hello there, being an opinion question, I'm sure there will be a hundred different answers...but here goes. So from what I've gathered, the correct stain color for my 1950 18' Sportsman would be Interlux 573 Chris-Craft Mahogany. But as original as it may look, that color comes out a bit too bright ...

I am about to paint my bilge with Sandusky mahogany bilge paint, and was wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't just go ahead and paint all of the interior (everything that will be covered with the ceilings and seats, etc) all the way up to the under sides of the gunnels? Re: Bed decks and covering boards?
Yes I agree that it is fortunate we are able to restore these boats given they weren't all glued together originally. Bed decks and covering boards?
Haven't thought of it much up to this point, but I am about to start fitting the fore and aft decks and all covering boards (on my 1950 18' Utility) and was wondering if those just go on dry, or do those need to be bedded in 5200 just like everything else has been? Seems like something that could be...

Re: Cold weather varnishing
Well I have no problem warming the building to 50-55 degrees for a few hours to apply the varnish, but over night the ambient temps will be dropping into the 30's, so I was wondering if those lows would damage the varnish before it cures in some way?

Cold weather varnishing

Bottom paint dry time
I'm soon to be finishing the bottom of my boat with Pettit 1959 Hard Racing Copper Bronze. And I see the "to launch" curing times on the can (2-8 days) in regards to temperature and all. But I will be rolling it to put on stands or a dolly to work on all the brightwork, and was wondering how long I ...
