Re: Hello Everybody
Hi Marco, Welcome :D . I seem to recall a recent thread about someone converting to a different V-drive/transmission brand for the same reasons you are facing, I think you will find it if you look back through the posts in this section. I believe I would also search online for transmission suppliers...

Late 60s gauges
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a fuel gauge for the 68 Commander, the Trading Dock has been very quiet lately and I have been looking around other various places but have not come up with one.
Any ideas?

Re: Ammeter shunt
So I've been a little busy with work so I haven't gotten much done with wiring yet,-damned work!. But I've gotten all the necessary parts collected so when I get time to work on it there won't be any more delays...I hope. I got heat shrink tube for my label maker so I can label all my circuit wires ...

Gas tank question
Hi guys, I have a question that I would like opinions on. Yesterday I re-installed the gas tank in the Commander and as I am admiring my progress I realized that there is a lot of open space under the tank and I had a thought that I could install a tank drain so I could have the option of draining c...

Commander wiring begins
Hi all, Well weather here in upstate NY is more normal for March/April than February, gray and gloomy day after day with rain and snow and temps hovering above and below the freezing mark. Saw my first robin last week. I can't continue fiberglass repairs on the Commander with it this cold so this is...

I've got a very good quality Fluke clamp-on and I'm ashamed to say I never though about it because quite honestly I've never used it for DC. I have all my new electrical equipment ordered and most of it is due in today. I'm building an electrical panel with a 12 space fuse holder, 2-bank digi...

Once everything is hooked up and running is there any way with common tools to confirm accuracy of the ammeter?

Sorry I wasn't able to post the photo I have, Troy and I have been trying to diagnose the problem...I think it might be operator error on my part  but as soon as possible I will get pix up and visible. Once all support pieces are glued in place they will all get tabbed to underside of the deck and to each other. Also got new floor o...

Re: Windshield hatch adjusters
Got a reply back from one of the feelers I sent out yesterday, ridiculous asking price for something that needed to be re-chromed. Decided to have a wire edm shop cut new ones out of polished stainless for less money. If anyone else needs some let me know.

Windshield hatch adjusters
Another little thing I'm searching for are the hatch adjusters on the flip-up center window in my windshield. They are functional but have been broken and crudely repaired so I thought I would just replace them. I did not think these would be hard to find but after having gone through the list of po...

Re: Ammeter shunt
Many thanks, your detailed explanation makes good sense. I will share a little detail found in the wiring diagram obtained from the museum, the notes on the drawing say wire size and lengths are as follows- #16 gauge wire to be exactly 11', #14 Gauge-18' and #12 Gauge 28'. The note says to coil and ...

Hi all, Well the temperature has moderated a bit so on days that are tolerable I go out and work on the boat inside my winter cover. Hi Bob, I found a web site, actually I was on a web site ordering a cutlass bearing and on this site "Deep Blue yacht supply" there is a link to a prop sizing service. You just tell them the particulars about the boat/engine etc and they will tell you the most probable diameter/pitch propeller. I th...

23 Commander update
Hi Guys, I hope everyone had a great holiday season, I know I did. Although progress on the Commander has been slow due to the cold weather here I have gotten a lot of things done that don't seem to show. First; there has been movement on the engine timing question. I dropped the engine off at the b...

Hi George,
The lancers that I have had and the Commander I have now all had Nautilex vinyl, I'm currently ordering some for my current project. It's not the exact color as the original but close and the texture is correct for the years.

Re: Lonely in fiberglass territory
Great info Brian,
The sound you mentioned is exactly the reason I asked, it's the effect I wanted. I won't be able to scrutinize the height difference until I get the engine back from the shop and get it reinstalled in the boat but now with this new info I can't wait.
Thanks,
Craig

Hi to all that have been following my new engine timing problem. My engine now resides at a top notch engine builder's shop. Re: New engine update
Well Mid City Motors was no help. The only thing they told me was to contact the distributor manufacturer. I'm thinking-for what? This problem I'm experiencing is most likely a cam timing issue, or the wrong cam? It certainly does not explain how an engine can run at 30 degrees base advance. I'm at ...

Re: New engine update
Using a basic timing light with an inductive pickup. I too am concerned about this much advance if in fact it's accurate. As you say, if the timing were off that far you would expect hard starting issues and yet it starts and runs wonderfully (at least on the stand), it would be interesting to see h...

Re: New engine update
Yes they do, this engine has a standard rotation pointer on it but 0 TDC is still 0 TDC no matter which way it rotates and yet the bigger issue is how far off the timing is and how well it runs that way. Makes no sense to me.

Re: New engine update
The second distributor I installed is an Accel, I've always thought they were fairly good. Either way the results were the same.
Even if the engine were a left hand and I were trying to run it right hand the timing should still be the same relative to TDC.
Very Strange!

Thanks Jim,
I resolved the problem by installing spacers between the heads and manifolds which created enough space so I could install a stock GM dipstick tube.
