Re: Frost/Freeze Plugs
That happened to me on my KFL this spring. 2 frost plugs and also the thrust plug on the end of the water pump. Some how all the water didn’t drain out. I popped everything back in and tapped the edges of the frost plugs lightly with a large punch and so far they have held in place. I’ve been winter...

Re: Can’t figure it out!
That’s exactly what the problem was here too. The dip stick showed enough oil but when I did an oil change I only sucked 4 quarts out, including the reverse gear. I added 6 fresh quarts and it’s right where it should be. Thanks for the input.

Re: Can’t figure it out!
Yeah. I will try a different pressure gauge.
Maybe sending unit is temperature sensitive but I am thinking that’s not it. Worth a try though.

Can’t figure it out!
I have a “W” engine that has 30 lbs oil pressure at start up. It does a crazy thing and drops to about 10 lbs when I get under way - at 1200 to 1800 rpm but if I keep driving, after about 4 or 5 minutes the oil pressure goes back up. Then it acts like it should meaning the higher RPM the higher the ...

Re: What the heck happened here?
I should have stopped picking sooner because I have almost half the starboard side picked. Then I realized it was the entire varnish coats coming off. So I will stop and sand the edges smooth and start the process of building the coats up. Yes it appears the surface under all that varnish is very sm...

What the heck happened here?
I was just about to put a fresh coat of varnish on and I noticed a bit of peel on the varnish at the water line and this happened when I picked at it with a putty knife. It looks like all of the varnish is coming off. Every single coat put on in the last 10 years. What the heck?

Re: Engine Oil - What Do We Use
See below what I copied form the link. Scientists discovered the use of polymers and the fact that these would expand with heat. VI Improvers are polymer material that expands as the oil warms up. This does NOT thicken the oil as is often stated. It merely slows down the rate at which oil thins out ...

Simple green never really worked well for me either.
Dish soap and hot hot water!
And that good ol' elbow grease - to remove the grease.

Re: Frames went boing!
I will post a few pictures tonight. I have a few broken frames and maybe that is enough to 'load' the remaining frames. I don't know but there was a lot of stress on the one frame I removed. and the second one I tested. I am not sure how you would remove any frames - let alone install an new one whi...

Re: Frames went boing!
So here is what I think happened. If you just support the hull only by the engine stringers, the entire weight of the hull is putting forces on all of the frames. I supported the hull with 1 x 4's along the shear but only after the boat sat for a while supported by only the engine stringers. I am co...

Re: Frames went boing!
The inside cradle is fastened to the stringers so that was done correctly. I was just curious if the frames can try to straighten out along the grain. That might explain why there are a few of the frames are split along the grain, as well. But no bolts were sheared. Hmmm. I will try to take some pic...

Re: Frames went boing!
I have to agree that makes sense but I have the entire hull supported inside and out before I started to take anything apart. I built a craddle inside the cockpit and supported the outside with 10 - 1 x 4 wood supports from the rubrail location to the floor so I don't think the hull is sagging under...

Re: Frames went boing!
Sorry. I forgot to mention that the chines have been removed and I unbolted the bottom frame from the side frame and it sprung up about an inch or more - which is actually down because the boat is, of course, inverted.

Frames went boing!
I am in the process of replacing the frames on the bottom of my 18' Riviera and when I unbolted and removed one of the frames it "sprung" into a different shape. I had to push it back down with quite a bit of force to get it to lay back down to get the bolt holes to line up again. So I removed anoth...

Doug, I am looking to get everything done, including carbs, water pump, fuel pump, dist, etc. and have it come back pristine and ready to drop in the boat - reliable for many years - and look great! There are engine rebuilders here but they will only rebuild the mechanical side and I have spoken wit...

Getting my KBL to USA
I am hoping there are fellow members that share their experiences (good or bad) with shipping an engine from Canada into the US for repairs/rebuilding. The 'cross-border' thing is intimidating with all the propper paperwork, etc. Getting into Canada is not a problem so hopefully getting out of Canad...

Another good option is "cage rollers". The theory here is that are supposed to roll, vs the skid plates that get rusty looking after dragging them across the pavement a few times. It's surprising but I drag these rollers going in and out of my driveway, back alleys, parking lots, etc. and I am glad ...

Hi Dennis, I have a 1958 sportsman with a KFL. Unfortunately it is my retirement project and won't see it float for a number of years yet. I would certainly love to see yours when you get it, Seeing how we are so close in our geographic location. I am, however, about to send the engine away for a co...

Here are some pics of the 'W' in my boat with a single carb. The 'WB' would have the rear carb aft of the single by about 5-6".. There might be enough stringer to accept it but it would be tight. I think I am going to take John's advice and give it a major tune up for now. I might revisit my options...

Paul, I contemplated the Scripps but it would be too much retrofitting to make it work. And it appears that the 25's with Scripps had the mid seats on the opposite side. I think you previously mentioned it was to accommodate the design of the Scripps. Also the engine stringers in the Scripps 25's we...

W vs WB
Can anyone comment on the difference between a W (160 hp) and a WB (200hp)? I haven't been able to find much info on the 'W' (which I have) but I somewhat understand the difference between the WB, WBS, WBR. There must be more than just an extra carb to get the extra 40hp. I am only wondering because...
