Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Hello,
I'm looking for the torque specs for the fuel pump bolts on a 95K. Leaking some oil after a recient engine rebuild.
Thanks.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Did you use sealant on the gasket? From the picture it looks like the oil is coming from the spring plate gasket. Did you make sure the oil drain back hole was in the right place on the pump to block gasket?

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Thanks for the quick reply...
I did not do the engine work. I farmed this out. At first, I thought I was getting oil coming out of the PCV tube but after seeing this I think the oil leak source may be the fuel pump??
Oil pressure info: Cold start up idle 45lbs warm idle 30lbs, warm underway 40lbs.
Should I remove the pump and check the to see if the pump to block gasket is on correctly? And second, your observation on the spring plate gasket looks like that could possibly be the problem. Should I replace that gasket too? I will at least check those screws as well.
Thank you.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Jim,
Looking at the picture again I noticed a drop of oil hanging from the priming lever. For oil to get there I would think its the pump to block gasket. The spring plates are prone to leaking. There are 2 reasons why. One is the spring plate gasket surface is not flat with leaves the gasket loose on the sides between the upper and lower screw. The other I've seen is some of the priming levers where not bent correctly. Which results in the spring plate not being able to sit flush on the pump housing.
I would take the pump off and see what gasket you have on there. If you do so take a picture of the gasket and the mating surface for the pump on the block. Hercules change the pump mounting area of the block in the mid to late 50's. It takes a different gasket then the earlier ones do.
If it makes it any better for you. You have to take the pump off to do the spring plate anyways.

OK,Thanks.
What are your thoughts on the oil pressure? Too high or OK?
Also, what is the hole above the lever for? is it possible the oil is coming for there?

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Oil pressure is good.
The hole you see is underneath the diaphragm. Thats is were you will see gas drip out if the diaphragm goes bad.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
I took the fuel pump off today to inspect the gaskets. The block to pump gasket does not look like the correct one..
Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Thats defiantly not the correct gasket. Pull it off the block and post a picture of the block.
Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Looks more like a carb gasket

Here is a photo of the block without the gasket.
Is the lower hole the oil drainback that was referred to?
Thanks.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Yes. Thats what the hole is for. With it blocked off the spring chamber was filling up with oil.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
That sure explains why it was leaking.
Thank you Jim for sharing your knowledge. I'll get her fixed.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Did you end up creating your own gasket for this? If not where did you get the correct gasket for the fuel pump?

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
It should be painted blue like the engine if you are going for factory correct. Just thought you may like to know.

Thanks for that iformation. Is the glass fuel bowl factory? I assume that would not get paint... I would like to keep the factory look as much as possible.maritimeclassics wrote:It should be painted blue like the engine if you are going for factory correct. Just thought you may like to know.

Yes, the glass bowl would be factory and no paint on the glass.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
I'm still having issues with an oil leak at the bottom cover plate where the two screws are. Since my first post I have sanded the bottom cover with 400 wet to flatten it out. Cut a new cork gasket for that cover, also made a new pump to block gasket (non cork material) and still get some oil leakage at the bottom of the cork gasket. It seems to be less of a leak but still not sealed.
My oil pressure is 40. This is a recently rebuilt engine and has never leaked before in this area.
What else can I do. The photo attached is from the initial leak time frame but just for reference where the oil is coming from.
Thanks.

Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Are you using sealant on both gaskets? I recommend permatex Ultra blue or grey. You also need to make sure that both the flange to the block and the flange for the spring cover on the pump are flat.
I usually flatten the spring cover then hold it against the pump body then hold it up to the light. I have had some so warped that when tightened down you could still push the cork gasket in and out on the side of the pump.
Also make sure your drain hole in the block is completely clear.

No, I did not use sealant on either gasket. Off came the pump again today. It appears the primer handle is not allowing the spring cover plate to net down. Will sealant fill this or do I need to do something else?
The oil drain hole on the block gasket required a very small trim to expose the entire hole. That is now good.
Thanks.
Re: Fuel Pump Torque Spec
Some of the primer handles were not bent very well were they sit in the notches. You can try 2 things. One you can try bending a sharper corner in the handle and the other is to file the depth of the notch deeper or both.
