Transmission Problems

Post by NOT Firewood » Sat Jul 04, 2015 9:12 pm

I hit a rock with my prop and my transmission did not like it. After I hit it it did not seem to move me at all, once I got it out of the water my on lookers said that the prop was spinning when I put it gear but It now vibrates bad.
Where do I start looking to fix this.. I am hopping it has a "cotter" pin or similar that is a easy replacement. Any suggestions are help full.

Is the wheel ok, or shaft bent?

As Doug said, check the wheel and the shaft first. It just takes something to be a little out of true to make a nasty vibration. :(

Your propeller. Just another term.

Check your strut as well. Inspect for dings on the prop and strut and break your shaft coupling loose to check alignment.Nine times out of ten, vibration is an alignment issue.

I have some new scrapes on the prop (wheel). the strut looks ok, when I grab the shaft I there is a bit of play in the cuttless bearing, how much is too much play?

Does the strut move? I still think you have a bent shaft. Can you remove from reverse gear to see if it still turns correctly?

Stut is solid, I can put the transmission in foward and Reverse. I guess pulling the shaft is the simplest thing to check first.

You do not have to pull the shaft. Undo the shaft coupler from the reverse gear (tranny) and turn the shaft by hand. If the holes do not line up...bent shaft.

You can turn the shaft by hand w/ a stationary block against the bottom of the boat and near the shaft at different locations especially near the end at the nut. Watch the space between the shaft and the block as you turn it. Carefully inspect the strut it could be bent also.
