ON GOLDEN POND
I came across a photo album, which was sold to me as once belonging to Pat Curtin (boat supervisor for On Golden Pond, among other films), and bought it. Turns out it actually belonged to Jim Hendricks. I thought some of the readers of the forum might like to see some of the photos, etc. in the album. I loved wooden boats long before the film, but was stricken by the U-22 layout and its sleek and beautiful lines. Now my wife and I own one and it does provide our family with much satisfaction. Here's some of what was in the album, ENJOY:

On Golden Pond/Thayer IV
Anybody followed up on Thatyer IV lately? Last I heard Hendrick's wife and daughter sold her to a club member in Minnesota who was going to restore and campaign her.

May depend on which boat you or they are talking about...There were three...One for the surface shots and one for the crash scene that Hendricks bought. The latter is still at the Holiday Inn in Key Largo with the hole in her bow. I've heard no more on the other after she went to Minnesota...I guess a call to the guy who took her there might reveal some details.
Then there was roumored to be a third boat used for the arial shots which I'd heard went to somebody in Ohio. This boat could be that one....Maybe ??? Maybe not.

Beware Matt. I think at last count there were 147 On Golden Pond boats out there..if you know what I mean. I have heard a lot of the stories...often someone has a U22 Sportsman, that happens to be about the right vintage...that they were told was an On Golden Pond boat.
If someone has one of the three, (and as Wilson says, one was destroyed, and last I knew the one in Key Largo was getting pretty rough) then they should have some pretty solid documentation—more than just, "someone told me this was an On Golden Pond boat."
Pat Curtin, as Ken points out, was certainly there on the shoot and has been the keeper of much of this history.

Speaking of the devil . . . . . Thayer IV is up for sale on eBay. The reserve hasn't been met, but it's belwo 8K right now. Wonder what it will go for.
I find it rather amusing that they claim to have ALL THE DOCUMENTATION and can't remember which Hepburn was the leading lady. Oh My?

It looks like the real deal.. he got it from a guy who got it from Pat Curtain. So? And yes I am the dumb dumb in this economy bidding. My fingers have a mind of there own... The thing is, its still a U22 The question is... Is there a good bottom on it. Or is it just a prop...

Golden Pond boat.
He didn't get it from the guy who got it from Pat Curtain because that "guy" Jim Hendricks is dead.
Jim's widow and daughter sold the boat ( I think thru Lou Rauh...but don't hold me to that) to a guy in Minnesota who was going to restore and campaign the boat...There is an article somewhere in the Brass Bell archives...
But as you say she's a U-22 but Hendricks kinda let her go to pot while he had her in the Keys.

OK I have more paper work now. I have a title, sold from Francis Hendricks in Key largo. Also some more shots, and it def needs a refresh and some work. I am not sure what the extra value is, other than a novilty. It aint the red slippers from The wizard of oz... But it is very cool. And since i am looking for a U22. It at least has a great story. Restoring it would be fun, while tring to preserve its history. windshield snaps and all.

Just spoke with Antique boat center. Lou is on vacation... Here is what Joel remembers. That there was no documentation of the boat. That there were 4 of them. And considering the pat Curtain to Hendrick story... mmmmmm. So. I suppose its like everything else in this hobby. Its art, with a fun story. The funny thing is that I am not sure if it increases the value at all. Its still a U22 that needs work. And an archivist....

The wrecked one is still in the sand box behind the holiday Inn in Key Largo. But Hendricks owned them both...and The Holiday Inn which has been sold

Looks like it has the holes in the appropriate spots in the seatbacks where the hooks which held the life vests were mounted.

Jim:
I seem to recall your mentioning that before...Wonder why Pat Curtain put the extra vent there when he restored the boat for the movie ?
The boat was at the Weirs Beach, New Hampshire show right after the movie...If I can find the pics I took, I'll see if they also show the extra vent which might tell us if Curtain took the vent out after the movie.
There is a two page spread in an early Brass Bell which should be in the archives which might show other distinguishing features.
Hope all's well and Merry Christmas...

Do we know the hull number of the correct boat? And yes I noticed the small vent. If you look on woodyboater, I also got the film clip that shows it both ways. Thats a key to this .. It looks like they moved it around? Not sure.

Yes, The hull number should on Jim Hendricks original membership application and probably elsewhere in the Hendricks file. Also there was a miscellaneous file on which I wrote down odds and ends for easy reference on matters like this. That stuff all went to Cedar Rapids when we closed the Tallahassee office.

Bill, you will be proud. I went to the archive... all by myself... And found a ton of stuff. Here is now proof that one of the boats only had one scoop. Dang. Looks like they were prepping for the Boston show.

My prediction...I am going out on a limb here. It stops at 35K. This is a tough market right now. With a orig or old bottom and a need for some bungs and a refresh. That may be all its worth. Infact it may be more than its worth.. We need someone that knows these things that is close by to take a look.
