Hot Tip on Custom Trailers for Chris Crafts

Post by steve bunda » Thu Mar 27, 2008 9:23 pm

I have had many boat trailers over the years and like a few.Oklahoma,Dorsey,Phoniex, but after owning all of them I feel, the best made Custom wood boat trailer is Eagle Trailers. A little tip is when these manufactures are busy building for the big guys they do not want to mess with a single custom boat trailer. But the good news is I have Eagle Trailers attention! Today the first 4 of 7 trailers have arrived and we are floored and pleased with the quality. two months ago Eagle came out and measured the Chris Crafts then procceded to built solid 4 bunk trailers with full options.,all with brakes,LED lights, prop cage with rollers under, ski package, guides, chrome wheels, spare tire, and more, thanks for looking, see pics, steve,,next load the tandems,we can, wait,

Steve - I have been swinging between a Eagle or Loadmaster trailer for my 21' Coronado and wondered what dealer you went thru to purchase. I'm in eastern Iowa and there is no one close to me. I tried the Yacht Club dealers and they aren't interested in talking inboard trailers. I think you are right Eagle puts out a great trailer and they do have a lot of woodies specs on hand

New Custom Eagle Trailers

Post by steve bunda » Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:50 am

Hi 1971vet, Many large boat dealers do not want to mess with one custom made wood boat trailer. that is why I order a truck load a one time, we are the largest dealer for Eagle Custom wood boat trailers and will be putting an add in the CCABC Trading dock soon.Eagle has patterns for some boats ,otherwise the enginner comes to my shop and measures the boats for proper fit, remember these are solid welded bunks. Each trailer is custom fit to each and every boat. One new feature is 2 little steel rollers under the prop cage, thus no more trailer drag going in or out your driveway, will take a pic and post. Bottom's Up Antique Boat is happy to share these great trailers with other wood boaters ,The boats deserve the best fit and looking product.steve

There is a company in Portland who makes a great custom trailer for woodies as well. He is very competitive with the other guys and offers a lot of custom features. The company is Ryan Trailers. They have a web site or you can PM me if you want contact info. Here's a couple shots of my new trailer. I love it. I went with an undermount spare holder, removable bumper, back up lites in the wheel well, back lit cut outs with the Chris Craft and the year etc....the chicks dig it.

Sorry for the delay in responding Steve. The boat is a 1929 22' Model 2 (aka Cadet). I just finished it last August. I'm the guy who sent you a seat bracket for the cadet you're working on.

The basic trailer was just under $5k. After all the bells and whistles it came out to about $6k. I got every possible option, including led lights, extra marker lights etc. The boat sits nice and low on the trailer and you don't even know it's back there.

hot tips on custom trailers

I can second the comment on Ryan trailers. They are really superior to anything else i have seen out there and they can be completely customized to suit your needs and desires, such as custom colors, etc.

I just re-read my post and want to clarify that "I don't even know it's back there" not because it's so low and I can't see it, but because the trailer rides so smoothly. Phewww.

trailers

Post by steve bunda » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:48 pm

The Ryan trailer is very nice, With the cost of shipping most boat owners will work with local trailer manufactures and should as there is many good ones . In the midwest I am a dealer for the Eagle brand and can compete with most other custom builders , a trailer for a 22 foot cadet with full options is less than 5k picked up at my shop. this includes .Tandum wheels, brakes all 4, custom paint, folding tongue,LED lights, wood boat package, ski package, new tires, spare, spare mount, chrome wheels, welded 4 bunk trailer. all in all a great trailer for road and storage, because the boats deserve it..
Mike, Thankyou for the hard to find seat bracket, it is for my personal boat that I have everything done but the wood work. You can see the boat in the back of my shop on the web site, antiquewoodboatrestoration.com thankyou , steve

Steve,
Here's a couple more pictures. I'm still experimenting with props for the boat but like this one. It's a 13square four blade. A friend had it lying around and it seems to work nicely. As far as the engine goes, I accidentally put the wrong one in :D. It's a 283 by Owens. I absolutely love it. It's a 1960 engine so I consider it a late model replacement. It's older than it is young.

Dennis,
The "Y" is Keuka Lake. I've spent a lot of time there as a kid. So did my wife. We didn't know each other then but decided to get married up there at Heron Hill. We'll be back in July for the boat show. Last but not least, my dad, Hank the Plank has recently moved there.

Thanks for the inquiries guys!
Mike

Steve,

just curious, will they give you a customized galvanized trailer. There are lots of folks that have to deal with salt water and may be interested in this.

Mike,I was so impressed with your idea for the "Y" of Keuka, I copied it for my hailing port. Wanted you to hear it from me, you know how this stuff gets around. Check it out, all comments are welcomed.

trailer for 32' 1960 Sea Skiff

Post by duveen » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:41 pm

Any idea what a trailer would cost for a 32' sea skiff? No bells and no whistles. What are the basic requirements and can any local metal smith put one together? Is it worth trying to find a used one needing some refurbishment?

I am really asking out of ignorance, so fire away. I have the boat on the blocks and I may need to move it this fall.
