Opinions needed on how to repair
Can I get y'all's opinion on to make this repair? There was a butt block behind these planks. Whats the correct way? Alternatives? Related, is this normal for a butt block or is there a procedure to reduce chance of trapping moisture? Boat is 1957 Coronado which was restored in traditional way maybe a decade or two back.
I'm sorry, I guess I can't post a pic without a certain number of posts? Lil help from a moderator ?

Email administrator. Number of posts shouldn’t matter. Picture would be helpful, for sure. Nothing inherently wrong with use of butt blocks.

Thanks! So now I've sent a PM to admin and the message is sitting in my outbox rather than sent box. Sorry for pandoras box of problems, anybody able to help from outside?

Are you doing this via the woody boater site? Sometimes it helps to go directly to the ccabc website and do things thru that? Don’t ask me why.

Reduce the size of your photo to be in the KB range. It should go.

Hi Bullitt, I once had a Resorter that had rot in the exact same location. Yeah, buttblocks are the common way to tie together a butt joint. The main thing is to make sure the block is bedded real well with a polysulfide caulk or something like Sikaflex. You will want to make sure it is sealed well underneath the covering board where it meets the plank. I think that's where the water intrusion was.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Re: Opinions needed on how to repair
Thanks for insight! Do I just cut back to good wood and then insert a new piece--this time with two butt blocks (on either end)?
Is there a recommended length for the new piece? Does it need to be a short as possible? or can it be any length? It appears that cutting out ONLY the rot would necessitate that the new piece be 8" or so. But would it be a better repair (structurally and aesthetically) if it were longer? say a foot or maybe even 2 feet?

The main thing is to make sure your joint doesn’t fall between the same frame members as the next plank below or above. If you can replace to the end either way would be good.
