Carter fuel pump rebuild question
Guys, at minute 2:52 this guy says do not reuse these pieces. I didn't get any in my kit so is it correct to toss them and just go without?

Re: Carter fuel pump rebuild question
Who did you get the kit from?
It should have come with some new pins. But they don't look like the original parts but work just fine.
Look at minute 11:58. Thats what the new pins look like.
Your new kit should have come with new pins, springs and a rubber disc.

I got the kit from Robert Henkel @CC parts.com.
I have the pins springs and valves but not the domed piece circled with the holes in it shown in my photo. The guy reassembles his without those pieces.

Re: Carter fuel pump rebuild question
It will work fine with the new pieces you have. You have to tap them in. That usually compress the shank some which is why you don't reuse them.

This 1961 fuel pump looks like it never had any paint. Is no paint correct for that vintage?

Re: Carter fuel pump rebuild question
Jim,
Should I be using this retaining clip? The new arm pin has a groove in the center for it but it just does not seem like it retains well. The original pin did not have a groove or a retainer clip. The original pin is shown and the new retainer clip is on the screwdriver handle. I neglected to see if the new and old pins were the same length and now have the pump reassembled. What do you think? Thanks.

Re: Carter fuel pump rebuild question
These kits usually have some extra parts in them for all the versions of that model pump. The pin is held in by the casting and the plug on the end.
Don't worry about the clip. Just throw it in that tool box door that has all that stuff that might be useful one day.

Hi Jim,
The water isn't hard here yet, so if you want to test drive it this weekend, just let me know! I will help you winterize the motor when we are done, as I need to learn how to do that for my boat next fall. Steve Anderson in St Clair Shores.

No test rides for me this time of the year. Just give me a call when you need help, I will be happy to do whatever I can.
