New Owner 1963 17' Chris-Craft Ski Boat

Post by collinscd » Thu Feb 14, 2019 1:51 pm

Hello,
I'm a new member and first time poster to the CCABC. I recently acquired a 1963 17' Ski boat. The paperwork I was given says the hull ID number is CUA160059C. Can someone tell me where I might find the hull number on the boat? From what I understand, if the hull number starts with 16, wouldn't this be a 16' boat? Looking forward to finding out about my new toy as well learning about these classic boats!

Congratulations on your purchase. It looks to me that it's a 16' the hull numbers are CUA-16-001 to CUA-16-250 they made 250 hulls and all were in 1962 but if some of the hulls were made after July 1 it would be considered a 1963. they all see to have came with the 283 V8 which would be around 185 horsepower. The boat weights about 2150 lbs. and would have come with a black bottom and a white waterline. Decks should be white vinyl and the interior black and gold unless otherwise specified on the hull card. You should find the hull number on the stringer around the engine and on some of the floorboards. Also look behind the aft seat on the deck frame it maybe stamped there. Good Luck.

Thanks for the information MaritimeClassics. My boat has varnished wood decks with no vinyl. The original 283 was replaced with a 327. I will do some poking around to see where I can find the hull number.
More to come....

welcome, cool boat. Just to expand on mike's comments a bit. Here is my understanding. boats with those serial numbers, according to the Conrad book, were the 1962 model year (not necessarily construction year) 16ft. ski boat. CC followed the auto custom. In this case for example, building the 62 models would have been started sometime in late summer, probably, of 1961 and the series completed some time in the first half or so of 1962.

maybe mike can add to his comment about 1963? He knows more about that than i do, but there was no 1963 model year 16 foot regular ski boat that i am aware of. they did make a 1963 model year 16' jet ski boat, but it had different hull numbers.

There was a 1963 model year 17' ski boat, but its numbers were cuc-17-001 to 17-020 or cud 17-001 to 17-160. Doesnt sound like yours is one of those based on the hull number mentioned.

As for further information, you can order the hull card and related material from the mariner's museum in newport news, va. which houses the chris-craft archive. It will show what the boat was originally equipped with, upholstery,, etc.

Also there is the international antique and classic boat society with chapters near you. if you havent joined you might consider it. You will meet good people who can help you with practically anything you want to know about your boat.

Thanks Don! The boat is really cool and has great looks. For all I know, the paperwork that came could have all the wrong information from what I'm learning here on this site. I will dig around for a hull number to really confirm Big Chief's identity.
I did submit an email the Mariner Museum for a hull card. Once I get that and find the identity, I will order more research.
Now if I can only figure out how to add pictures to my responses???

Great. when you hit reply and type a response, there is a bar above the space for typing. the 9th box over has a icon that looks like a mountain and the sun. click on that and then upload the picture. we would love to see what you have. in the late 50's and early 60's cc was a little slow in trying to pick up on the market that the century resorter had a pretty much dominated and the ski boat was part of that effort.

Yes often if a boat changes hands more than a few times, somehow the length and year can get lost in translation. so that is most likely what happened here.

No problem Don. I belong to many other forums and never had difficulty uploading pictures. I also tried the attachments button below and still get errors. I'm hoping someone can chime in since I would like to share pictures of my boat and show some of the work.

Your image is probably over the limit size. Reduce the size a lot(under 1MB) and try again.
