REAR DECK VENTS
The brochure (copy) of the 1959/1960 CC Continental 18' receive from the Mariners Museum shows the deck vents (opening) facing the front of the boat. I've seen 50% of the Continentals with the deck vent opening facing aft. My thinking is that the bow vent takes in the fresh air and it exits out the rear vents. Am I missing something???? I'm going for forward!!!

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
I'm looking at a photo in the Essential Guide, it shows three vents on the hull sides facing aft. Are these the ones you are referring to? It doesn't show any vents on the rear deck.
The photo looks correct to me as there are two large vents on the front deck for intakes and the vents on the sides would be outlets.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
This may sound strange, but check the years of the vents. The Coast Guard changed rules along the way. Reverse facing actually I think suck IN the air. Not the way around?

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
The vents are on the rear deck on the port and starboard side. Vents are original with the boat; 1959 CC Continental. They cover a 3" diameter hole that vents out of (or into) the gas tank area of the boat. Vents are located on the horizontal surface. You will notice that this particular picture shows the vents facing aft.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
I see in the pic that your boat doesn't have the vents on the front deck so I would face them FWD If the side vents are facing aft as they should.
I still think a FWD facing vent will pick up air like a scoop as the boat moves along. Interesting dilemma.
Maybe if we can get some wind tunnel testing done we'll get our answer.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
Are there small vents on the sides? On my 24 Sportsman thats how it was. 4 vents is the coast guard rule. In 1940 the transition was made. Two facing rear in the rear, two faceing forward . But the two could be on the side?

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
This particular model did not have aft deck vents at all until 1959. They should face forward, opposite the forward hull side vents, like the museum photo

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
BTW this could be a fun story? Its the small details and factory changes in mid stream of production that make it fun

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
Try this - one forward and one back facing - Got to hand it to creativity/ingenuity.

There is a center mounted scoop just ahead of the windshield on the bow of the continentals around this time - hard to see in the photo above

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
I don't know this model that well, is the bow light vented? Also, highly recommend a blower exhaust

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
Gallagh59, is that a clamshell vent on the front deck? Looking at your pic the first time I thought it was a rear view mirror.
The boat listed on Antique Boat America has a single vent in the middle of the front deck and what appears to be a vented bow light.
The pic from the Essential Guide shows two vents on the front deck side by side. At the factory they did do a lot of “do what you can with what’s on the shelf” so there were some inconsistencies during production.
That being said- if the front deck has vents on it I would face the rear vents aft.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
I'll add to the confusion. My 18' 1960 Continental has one large forward facing vent on the fore deck between the lift ring and windshield. There are two (one port, one starboard) small rearward facing vents on the hullsides about at the front seat. There are two forward facing vents (one in each corner) on the rear deck. The boat was stripped and refinished by a reputable dealer prior to my purchase, and I can only assume they were replaced in their original orientation.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
This is the best! I love it and exemplifies why this is such a fun passion. I will bet you dollars to doughnuts there is a work order sheet someplace in the files about a change about scoops on these. It will have a date on it. This is what happened on my Barrel Back, it had 4 Bear Claw Vents. Turns out the two extra were added at the dealer to comply with new laws. Mine was the transition boat. After that it was cups. Mine still had the price written in wax pen on them.

Re: REAR DECK VENTS
WOW!! Didn't know this was going to generate such excitement!!!! OK, thanks for the replies! I'm going with the horizontal bow vent facing forward; two rear deck vents facing forward (as in the brochure); and the two side vents facing aft. I may change them depending on the month and date!!!! Thanks!
