Motor make

Post by Ray Jorgensen » Tue Jul 12, 2016 7:33 pm

Original sale bill says the motor is a CC. The guy who rebuilt it says its a GM. The owner thinks it should be a Chrysler. Who was the original motor manufacturer for a 57 sea skiff? Thanks

Hi Ray,
Chris Craft did the marine conversions on many of the engines they used. What type of engine are we looking at? Is it a flathead six, or a V-8. Post a pic?
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

CC used 283's in Sea Skiff's. What size, the 283 didn't show up from the factory in the 22' until 59, I believe.

The 283 GM based V8 did not show up in any Chris Craft models until the 1959 model year although many boats have been repowered with Chevy v8's over the decades.

The original motor was likely a flathead straight 6. Some variant of the CC model K engine based on the Hercules engines. Does the bill of sale list the model? Do you have the hill card? It will tell you for sure.

You might want to post a picture. At the boats age it could have be repowered with many different engines.

The mechanic is sure this is an 80" type motor. Probably a replacement for a blown one.

Not sure what an 80" type motor is. But from the looks of it. Its a flywheel aft engine. It also looks like its a Crusader engine. Can you post a picture of the top of the valve cover.

For shure, that is a small bock GM V8. Whether a 283 or something else takes a closer look... The valve covers indicate something newer then the 283, maybe a 305 or 350....

What ever it is it's not the original engine, right? The owner wants to know so he can pass the info on whether he leaves it to his kids or sells it.

Looks like a Crusader to me by the exhaust manifolds.

You can tell him with 100% certainty that that is NOT the factory original engine in a 1957 Chris Craft.

The casting number is right on the top of the flange on the Port side, above the flywheel. That will tell you with some certainty what it is. You can cross reference that number.
