'57 Constellation Refurb

Post by Ken Hodge » Thu May 21, 2015 1:51 pm

I am in the process of refurbishing a 35' '57 Constellation and want to remove and refinish the stanchions. Right now the hull (in great shape) is being being refinished and the engines are out for rework. Moving forward a step at a time.

The time will come when I will begin to refinish the deck and that leads to a question. Can someone tell me how the stanchion bolts are attached to the underside of the deck? Are they large screws (doubt it), or bolts? And, if bolts, do they turn into a loose nut, a captive nut or is there a threaded plate that is held in place by screws? Last thing I want is to back out a bolt and then hear a loose nut fall into some unknown location.

Questions. Questions. Questions. And this is just the start.

Maybe Troy Hersom will see this post. I believe he just went through this.

Welcome to the club! We have a 58 35' Connie, but we never finished because we bought our 1940 33'. The stanchions are top screwed/bolted till you get towards the aft deck...then they get abit more tricky with the bolts being thru the bottom. I took mine off and got them powder coated.

As Doug said I am also in this process on a '58 38' Connie, however I have yet to take off the supports that attach to the deck. I suspect there are nuts under there, but have not climbed down there to figure that out.

I have been planning on glass beading my parts than painting them with rust-o-lium, but powder coating sounds like a very good idea.

I also purchased some copper never seize for the reassembly.

Since it is now the end of May I suspect my rails are going to go back together without being completed and I will take them apart again next year to do the next step. It's time to "Go Boating!" as John in VA would say. :D

PS: The reason I suspect they used nuts is because I know the stern cleats are attached with nuts.

The radar mast on Joan Roy is factory powder coated. It was installed new six year ago and the finish is popping off. I've been told by a couple of very experienced boat guys that powder coat doesn't hold up in the salt environment and it's hard to touch up to match with paint. Looked great for a while, but it looks like crap now. I'd go with the paint. At least you'll be able to fix it when it starts to pop off.

I have found that in salt air a very thin coating of petroleum jelly (Vasoline) on metal parts will retard the salt action.

Used also on salmon rod and reels

I am always amazed at how much information I glean from other peoples threads. :D

Thanks Guys! Sounds like paint and Vaseline to me. (Can I say stuff like that here? Am I on the right site?)

If corrosion is an issue, try Eezox instead of petroleum jelly.
