propellor shaft strut

Post by mogar » Sun May 10, 2015 7:43 pm

I am currently restoring a 1955-1956 21' Capri. The prop shaft strut that came off the boat is marked as 1166 AF. The propellor shaft is 20 degrees as measured on the strut thru the keel. This boat is only one of three with the engine: Cadillac CM-300.
What other struts have been used on these Capris?
To add to the whole situation the shaft log has the numbers 869 in the casting. It is about 7 1/2 inches long. This is short! No other log has ever been attached to the keel.
Comment, with short length boats, say 15 feet, you would expect a high angle of the propellor shaft. As the length increases the angle should go down towards 10-12 degrees. On Baby Gar Woods the angle is about 10 degrees. Just remember that if you are in the hull when installing the engine make sure you can get out. :)

Through hull#74 strut number 8943.
Hull #75 and up strut # 11663

I can find no other numbers and all engine options used the same strut.

Log is correct number and used on a number of other models including 18 and 21 cobras, 19 capri and 20 custom.

Greg Wallace is right on except he added a 3 by a typo to the 1166. What occurs on the strut is "1166 AF". The AF stands for Algonac Foundry which is still in business.
It would be interesting to have the shaft angle documented here on the Boat Buzz for various different WBs.
For example my 1937 19' Gar Wood with a Gray Marine 6-150 has a shaft angle of 16 Degrees.

Actually Greg quoted the "New" IBM part number from the parts book. When they changed to the new IBM format, probably in the late 1950s, they added a 3 or 4 to the end of the casting number to fit the IBM format.
