sealing new planks on lapstrake
Hi everyone. I was wondering should I use 5200 to seal between the lapstrake planks or some thing else I have about ten planks to do . I never replaced lapstrake planks before and don't want any leaking or plank cracking (isthis even a problem on these boats). I will be starting this work soon and want to be on the right page!!!!!Is there anything else you guys think I should know about lapstrake boats.I was just thinking solid wood or plywood for planks as i heard they are made of plywood ???????Thanks guys your advice is always truly appreciated . I too will be replacing a couple of plank sections on my Sea Skiff soon. I believe 5200 is the proper sealer to use here. It is a sealer/adhesive that maintains it flexibility. Plywood is the plank of choice. I found out there is no 3/8 available in Canada so I have gone to 9mm MERANTI AQUATEC 7 ply (4' X 8' sheet).

I personally have not tried this. But Loctite has a good name and is 1/3 to 1/2 the price of 5200

It says not recommend for continuous contact with water.
Re: sealing new planks on lapstrake
I did see where it is not recommended for continuous underwater use, but the article also includes information from boat builders that maybe of some information to the forum.

5200 with plywood planks. Plywood won't swell and take up like solid wood planks, so you need this to seal the seams. It also adds a lot of strength.

5200 is what I used in the joints of the new strake I put in a few years ago. Its tough stuff. Once cured you have to cut is loose. Its very similar the the thiocol CC used. That was tough stuff too. Some folks like Boat Life.

Re: sealing new planks on lapstrake
Doug, The sections I am replacing are 3 short planks, 10" to 36" port side aft. They all attach at the transom so I will butt block these pieces. If I was working-in larger planks I would scarf. (after much consideration and expert advice). No epoxy, only CPES and 5200.
