Fastener Exchange / Trade

Post by Tom Gruenauer » Sun Oct 28, 2012 11:57 am

I'm getting to a point in my restoration where I need one screw here and there to complete a task. I found a few places that will sell one screw, the issue is shipping cost between $9.00 and $15.00 for one screw.
We all have an assortment of screws and we all have a need for the odd one or two. How about trade / exchange? I need one #14 x 1 round head slotted silicon bronze screw. I have a good assortment of FH screws. I even have two #14 x 7/8 RH Frearson SB. Let me know I may have something you need. Post or private message.

Tom

What a great idea. I find myself in the same situation.

Drives me absolutely nuts.

I think I have a bunch of those screws and will check later today.

Glad to stick some in the mail to you. Free of course

One other thought.

If we were to start a topic section like this I would insist it be only for people who help others for FREE!!!!

Trading Dock

Post by steve bunda » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:17 am

I would like to see an area to trade parts and even project boats in real time. It could help every one to complete their projects and clear out unneeded parts. Cost could be donations to the club.

Tom
This is a very timely post. I am in the very same situation. Just yesterday I found that I needed three 1/4 X 3" Silicon bronze carriage bolts and 6 nuts to finish installing some frame base supports for the engine compartment shelves. Without having them it put the breaks on my completing the rest of the installation for the day and until I can get these pieces. As I am completing my restoration I am running into a handful of specialty sized screws, washers and nuts that can't be bought at the local big box store. I just don't need to get a box of 100 for each piece when all I need is one or two so ordering them from a business is not really practical.
What we need is a members access spread sheet that would allow both those in need and those with extra fasteners to make contact with each other. The "seller" sheet would list the fastener type, size and available quantity as well as any pricing. The "fasteners wanted" list would list the type, size and quantity needed. If such a list were to exist I would be happy to pay for my needs plus reasonable postage and in return I would post my extra Silicon bronze fasteners to help out anyone that would happen to need them. Let's do it!

Kerry, Good idea. This kind of thing could even be set up for free in an online document sharing environment like Google Docs, DropBox, etc.

Great concept but no workable plan for execution!

Getting the needs posted is easy.

Getting the responses posted (I have that) might get posted.

Getting the original needs list revised, just ain't gonna happen.

Last week I paid $40 for 4 carriage bolts including shipping. Now I have 4 extra 3 1/2 X 1/4.

Before you tell me you need them, let's try to think through how the posting of availability and the subsequent trans action should be handled in the Buzz.

It should work so as long as they are available they can be requested and when gone, users can know that.

My idea is that anyone with bolts or screws available post their list and up date it as they send them out. Each thread would only deal with that original posters supply and the last post would be what is left.

Personally, I will be happy to give my extras away and pay shipping because of all the great help you all have been. I suppose others will want to recover their original cost and shipping. That's ok by me. They can post that with their list.

If we can't get a way to run a "system" of posting and updating then we can just post our needs and hope someone has them, sees the request and responds. If that is how it is done, at least please clean up the thread by posting what happened.

All good thoughts.

I would hate to see the Buzz turn into a flee market.

The original intent is to share information and help each other.

Maybe we just try it the way it happened here first. Someone needs something and someone else is glad to help free of charge.

there has been plenty of "offline" ("I've got one of those, send me a PM and we can make a deal") commerce generated on the Buzz and for the most (99% of the time) it has been handled great.

I'm with Don. I don't manage my inventory at my shop and can't imagine having an online list. But I'm happy to help when possible.

Kerry, did you get your bolts?

Mike,
Problem solved. I had some longer bolts that I cut down to 3" and using a die added threads. This was an easy fix. Now if I can only find a way to turn my extra 3/4" R&P flat head screws into round heads :-)
