Mariner's Museum yesterday

Post by jfrprops » Fri Oct 07, 2011 10:45 am

I went to the Mariner's Museum for a brief vist to the CC collection yesterday. Very nice folks and great facility.
I remind you distant folks that I am close enough to go there for research...but in truth the staff has all the covered and more.

OK, we've got a Rendezvous at The Mariners' going on here. Keep it up and I'll have to bring my special odors along too (you think smelling gas is bad).

We need to reconnect with the Mariners some....I agree and would be willing to help.

Inside the Chris Craft area, there is a wonderful reading room, sparsely used by student of Christopher Newport Univ.....the museum had a big shelf of duplicate books for sale from their collection..I got three great books for ten bucks....well worth the trip.

John, do you know the new person that works with the Chris-Craft Collection at the museum. Is it Patti Henson? I heard (from a distant friend) that she and her crew are doing a good job managing the Collection now days (possibly better than in the past).

Lets do this.. We can call it Boat Buzz Un Plugged.. Come meet all your boat buzz pals in person.. i am sure there is some lame hotel there.. We can eat drink and swear all we want.. Dont need to bring a boat, nuth'n but laughs... Dont make it a grand event, just fun.. We can invite some sort of someone to talk about the good old days.. make a t shirt.. The first annual boat buzz un plugged.. Oh this idea may seem lame now.. Wait til its 20 outside and just a wiff of varnish gets you hot..

That's a good idea, sign me up.

How about asking Phil to make some commemorative Un-Plugged buckets? Wait - Will the airline let you take a bucket as "Carry On"?

Maybe a tee shirt is easier...

ALL:

I think we should proceed with a Buzz guys/gals get together at the Mariner's. As to Hotel, I stay at the Omni, it is first class.....would be a great winter venue.

Matt, let's you and I, being in Virginia, work on this...with your Woody work (as oppossed to working woody...) you have enough to co-ordinate...I could do the leg work and it would be fun. Invite ACBS friends also.

Guys, I'm in. Not quite sure I'm on the old fart side but my wife says I'm on my way. 43 here. I may be out of my league as this is my first restoration but I enjoy it and have already been thinking about a second. Love the idea of the group meet-up and I have some ideas about a commemorative weekend novelty or take-home. Hotel and smokey pub sound great. I was just thinking about a weekend getaway from the family and I was going to head to the Va. mountains to do some trout fishing but would definitely do the Mariner's.

Yes, invite our ACBS friends and we can shame them into joining CCABC and Boat Buzz.

Maybe the tee-shirt could depict a bucket with a Boat Buzz Un-Plugged logo on it; the best of both suggestions, a bucket that fits in a carry-on.

Phil, great! You'll fit right in with the group at age 41. Look forward to meeting you.

This sounds like a great idea...count me in! I dont mind being the young one. Then after we are finished at the museum...we can drive 1/2 hour north and everyone can grab a brush and help me with some painting and varnishing! :D

Being the LOCAL, I guess folks are waiting on ME?

Open to suggestions.

We could tour the CC collection, have dinner, spend the night at local hotel (Omni...I like) etc.

We could/should visit some boats in the Tidewater Va. area?

Let's start by having potential attendees say so in a post here...I will compile a list, when you write in, suggest before or after the holidays, agenda, etc etc.

Tidewater folks that have nearby boats, let us know that.

I can attempt to line things up at the Mariner's Museum.

Let's remember, the LIBRARY in which is now housed the CC collection is actually half a mile from the museum proper in the stunning library of Christopher Newport University.
If Matt or others have differnt concept, just post.

And the survey says...

My thought on this is to plan for after the first of the year. The rest of this year is usually busy, it is for me unless we go mid-week.

It's going to get cold soon and most boat yards and marinas are closed up tighter than a new pair of jeans. The Library wouldn't have as much traffic though.

Post by Woody Gal » Wed Oct 12, 2011 6:20 pm

After Thanksgiving and before Christmas looks good for me. Hopefully it won't be too cold then or after the first of the year works too.

Do they have the Woodies out on display now? When I was there a few years ago there was one only Chris-Craft woody and a few classic aluminum and fiberglass boats on display. I think there were plans in the works for a new display space and all of the Woodies were in storage.

Keep sending suggestions.
Matt Smith and I are in contact and working on it from here in Virginia.
The LIBRARY is where we want to congregate and concentrate, not the Museum proper, though we could tour it...if we had a week!! Unreal collections.
But the CC stuff is at the Christopher Newport univ. library location.
