Fender cleats/cover tie downs

Post by Captbob626 » Thu Aug 01, 2013 8:59 pm

Can any one tell me how many cleats were on a 19' 1956 capri and their location.. Any information would be appreciated. I am thinking about adding them to my capri to hold the in water cover down?

Zero unless your hull card says otherwise.

Thanks Brian,

Did the dealers ever install these. My predicament is I have no way of holding the in water cover on.
If I add them does it detract from the boat?.

I think they detract from the boat - who wants to drill holes in your beautiful wood??

Use snaps. Replace screws in your stem band, transom bands, rub rail etc with snaps to secure the cover. Or sand bags?

If the boat showed the cleats on the boat from the dealer I see no reason not to reinstall them even if they were not original. I have very early photo's of the cleats on my boat and I know they where not original but I wanted to preserve all the wood on my boat and I elected to keep all the covering boards and deck in place and it had the holes in the wood. I asked one of the judges and they told me it would be better to reinstall the cleats than filling the holes. It may not be correct but if the cleats were put on a month after the boat was built and it has been that way for almost 60 years it is going to stay until it is gone. I like my boats original and I go to a lot of work to get them back that way. Oh well if my boat was ever in a show they would take a few points off.........

Brian may know how many points are deducted for snaps on screws.

With all that said I would not put the cleats on a boat if I had to drill new holes.

My two cents!
