Side rail nails 1960 20 foot Sea Skiff

Post by tombrancheau » Mon Jul 22, 2013 2:53 pm

Its been a while since I have posted but I have a question. The side rails on my boat (flat part you would step on) made of 3/8 mahogany were nailed in about 1 every 2 or so inches. They were a long flat wedge. No head to speak of. Does anyone know what I mean.

Thanks

Tom

A picture would be helpful but they sound like nails that were used on tongue-and-groove wood flooring in houses. Can you tell whether they are possibly copper nails?

I do not have anything like that on my Sea Skiff.

Thanks for responding. I saved a small bag of them for reference but cant find them. I am quite sure they were copper nails. I will look for the bag tomorrow and post some pictures.

Tom, I agree. It seems unlikely that nails or brads would have been used to fasten covering boards or toe rails on your Sea Skiff. The Sea Skiffs were advertised as being of the same high quality construction as any Chris-Craft product. Would the Sea Skiff Division have used a different production standard in 1960?

Tom, I would look for any signs of original screw holes in the shear and frames that may have held the original boards in place.

Has any other Sea Skiff owners found nails in these boards?

The decks and rail caps on my 1958 Sea Skiff Open 18 were glued with resorcinol and nailed. This was definitely original construction. On my rebuild, I used screws and bungs.

If I remember, and its getting harder :? , some Sea Skiffs were made by "Thompson" who did use brads or nails on their decking.

Thanks for the additional input. I will attempt to post some photos that Tom emailed to me using my iPhone. These show the shear and the finish boards, with no sign (with my eyes) of screw holes in either. I think it indicates that brads or nails were used initially.

Photos will not upload. Note says "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached". There may be a problem on the website. I'll try later.

I'll try uploading some now:
