Steering Column

Post by Pete DeVito » Mon Dec 10, 2012 10:14 pm

I thought I would share my new steering column that is much better than rechroming that old one. I purchased a piece of mirror finished stn stl tubing from McMaster Carr and only had to cut about 5" off of it. I turned the inside down just a little to fit the bearing in one end and slip over the gearbox on the other end. Built two pieces out of Phanolic one for each end to keep from messing up the tube when turning the insides down on the lathe.
The bearing show the old rusted out tube. The one photo show the new tube still wrapped in paper and the old tube next to it.

Very nicely done! Do you have a McCarr part number for the tube?

An improvement on the original, good work!

While you're at it, knock out a dozen more.

Got a piece of tubing not long ago to use for the column on the boat I'm building. Spent about 40 mins at the buffer with red rouge only, and it cleaned up reeeeel nice. I have found McMaster-Carr a valuable asset when oddball stuff is needed...fast delivery, too.

The McMaster-Carr part number is 1750T193 and the description is Multipurpose Stn Stl (Type 304)
#7 Mirror finish, 1-1/2" OD X 1.402" ID, .049 Wall
36" long. Price today is $51.29.

This is the part number and you want the mirror finish and you won't have to polish. Again I had to build the collars to go on each end so I could turn down the insides a touch. You will only have to take about .40 off the ID. Just measure your old before turning. This is better and cheaper than fooling around with chrome.
