Screws for rub rail on 1960 Capri

Post by Peter McBratney » Fri May 29, 2020 2:55 am

I am getting near to the end of a 20 year restoration (rebuild) of a 1960 Capri I bought in New Hampshire and had shipped to Australia.

I have new SS 3/4 inch rub rail and new need to source the right screws. I think they were mushroom head with cross recess. They were either SS or chrome steel.

When I asked in my local city fasteners supply shop I was told there was no hope!

Can anyone provide guidance on where I might get them?

Thanks

Picture of the hull attached. Next job there is bleach and staining.

I used No. 6 x 1 1/4" (3.5 x 30 mm) SS oval head screws for my 7/8" (22 mm) SS rub rails. The holes was countersunk for No. 6 screws. www.ccfastners.com here in the US has the screws.

Just a suggestion when you go to drill the new holes for the screws; getting the hole centered in the rub rail countersink is easier and more accurate if you use a VIX bit. It goes by other names, but it has a retractable spring loaded mandrel that centers the bit in the rub rail hole and at least bores a pilot hole that you can follow up with a correct sized bit and countersink. Used for accurately boring holes for door hinges. Available at most hardware places and on Amazon.

The correct screw for the rub rails on your boat would be #8 X 1 1/4 chrome plated brass reed and prince oval head. If you use #6 you will find they are sunk into the metal to much and a 3/4 will most likely pop out over time up towards the bow where the bend is. Top Notch Fasteners have the correct screws you want.

Many thanks for the replies.
I have fitted SS with No 8 stainless steel CSK head to get them fitted, but will now chase up correct screws.
It was an interesting job fitting all new SS. Attached photo shows the deliberate mistake. Can you spot it?
Regards
