Decals and finish over them

Post by George Emmanuel » Mon Nov 04, 2013 2:02 pm

I've got the hull stained. Many "Thanks" to Maritimeclassics for recommending the Jel stain. It is wonderful.

Now to the question. The boat is a 1955 17' Sportsman. Where can I get the correct "Chris Craft" hull side decals? I've seen the correct style and they are silver. When I got my boat the decals were golden. Which color is correct?

Second question. I assume they are placed on the hull after several coats of varnish for good adhesion. Do you varnish over them? Even if they are vinyl?

Originals were silver. Varnish and age result in gold.

classic boat connection has them. Put a few coats of varnish over them after they are on. This will prevent them from having to replace them after a sand and re-fresh coat of varnish in the future.

Is it the norm to varnish over the transom name also?

I would varnish over a true water transfer type decal or applied "Leaf" such as gold silver or aluminum. The 3M style self adhesive decals are more durable as are painted on names and as such would not(necessarily) need the extra sealing property desired from the varnish coat. Captains choice.
