matching color on planks
Hey guys im an old cruiser guy now im trying my luck with a 17 ft runabout i had to remove previous owners reg. numbers starboard side varnish lifted, last owner said he used no stain on sides. ok i sanded down the one plank one coat of cpes plank turns natural reddish color two coats of varnish so far it sticks out like sore thumb im wondering if more varnish will bring closer to other planks or should i sand off plank and start over maybe bleach and stain.thanks for comments.

Re: matching color on planks
I thought the cpes would be th same as a thinned varnish sealer coat, im new to cpes i wish i would have just tried thinned out varnish the way i used to do but they say cpes is clear no color im puzzled! I need to get this boat in water my girl friend is getting well you know how it is when youve got a few to many projects Ha Ha! Do the other planks look stained to anybody?
Re: matching color on planks
Before trying anything drastic, try tinting varnish, CPES does penetrate and I don't think sanding will help much.....certainly not bleaching.
.....and if that doesn't work....
Put it in the water and play boat. Varnish season is over in May.

I would say moisture, but it's weird because the rest of the boat's bungs are light.

Ok after several long neck ice cold buds ive i m going to sand plank down to bare wood try very thinned coat of C/C red stain and re varnish its just to brownishDoug P wrote:Before trying anything drastic, try tinting varnish, CPES does penetrate and I don't think sanding will help much.....certainly not bleaching.

Re: matching color on planks
Alex, By looking at that plank and especially the bungs, it seems to me that the CPES has soaked into the wood and sanding and starting over may be too late to get to the bare wood. I'd again recommend a thinned stain over what you have now. You can get small cans of Weldwood stain and they have sample finishes. John said it was the light mahogany, I agree as the red will really offset that plank. Nice that you have a couple of coats of varnish... so you can keep on testing/wiping off until you come to the closest. Once you have a match.....then varnish....and go boating

Thanks Doug i added some C/C #573 red stain to varnish and applied a coat this morning i think it will help, bungs are still darker i guess the cpes did that ill post photos, i know i wont be completey satisfied but i plan on re varnishing intire boat next year i still have 40ft cruiser to finish to many irons in the fire. I like your photo of old Chris Smith you know he was a real cat bird! That hat and cigar you gotta love it, Happy Boating!
Re: matching color on planks
CUES only goes so far into the wood. Sand the plank before you apply any stain.

Re: matching color on planks
OK Jim you were right i opened THE BOX! tried light thinned coat of Chris Craft red stain too reddish i sanded down plank one more time thought about trying some golden oak stain what do you guys think? I m just trying to get a close match for this summer.
Re: matching color on planks
Despite what some say, CPES can penetrate up to 20". The board now is a piece of plastic that has to be colored, only need for sanding is to give it a mechanical finish to anything to adhere...the color light mahogany, as John stated is correct. Put on a real thin coat, DO NOT VARNISH, if is not the right color, try again with a thicker coat and so on. When you get close.....then varnish.
Good Luck

Right on Doug, CPES goes on following the stain. finish coats over CPES.Doug P wrote:Despite what some say, CPES can penetrate up to 20".
