Finishing the hull CC semi enclosed 1951

Post by Cookiejan » Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:19 am

Hi, I am refinishing the hull. It was painted 10 years ago and in my ignorance I let the painter put car filler over the seems. It cracked all the time a few hours after it was in the water. This winter I decided to make the hull completely blank up to the bare planks. Now we started painting and after 2 layers we see that the seams will not fill completely. Anyone a good idea ?? On the first picture before where you see the chipped paint.

I have used Interlux Y31 seam compound. There is the white for above the waterline and the brown for below. On wider seams you will need to pay in some cotton to back it up (1/8”-1/4”). It stays soft and flexible.

Hi, the Interlux Y31 seam compound is not for sale in Europe, I checked with the manufacturer, it is produced in the USA. The suggest to use 3M 5200MC which I am not so sure if that is correct. What do you think ??

I don’t know if I would use the 5200 on the seams. It’s a great product in certain places for it’s tenacious adhesive qualities. It is very much like a tough rubber when cured and not as sandable as they say. It’s kind of messy to work with, very permanent and hard to remove once cured.
3M makes a 4200 product which a little less adhesive and removable if need be. I have never used the 4200 but, you might want to look into that.
I would stick with a very good caulking product if you can’t find something similar to the seam compound. I would still back it up with caulking cotton on the wider seams.

Hi, just a update. We are finished on the hull now and it looks fantastic. On your advise we used 4200 which worked really good. I think is is more suitable for the job. Luckily it was available in Europe and on stock. The proof will be when we put her in the water, we hope the seams stay intact and the coat will not crack between the seems. I think it helps a lot that I have a no soak 5200 bottom so this will not expand. Once she is in the water I will update

Looks great! You should get a little swelling, the concave you left in the seams will take up any of that. Nice job. :D Let us know how it holds up after launching.
