Valve covers and intake manifold for 327

Post by island time » Wed May 04, 2016 7:37 pm

Hi Guys, I found a new toy, Don't judge me but I just acquired a 1968 CC 23 Commander.
The original 327QA is there with only 450 hours on her. A previous owner replaced the original intake manifold with an aluminum high rise monstrosity and a holley 750 double pumper as well as finned aluminum valve covers. I want to find original parts to return her to stock so if anyone can help with this endeavor I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Can you post photos of what it took to convert it? Q manifolds are really hard to come by.
What kind of valve covers does it take?

Here's a pic of the Q intake manifold. This will be a bit tougher to find than a set of valve covers. :D

Those are the valve covers I'm looking for. I'm learning that the Q manifold is indeed a rare item and if I can't find one I will survive but if at all possible I want this engine to look like it came from the factory when I get done with it. Not sure if I remember how to post pictures but if they come through I hope you can see anything that helps. Sorry for the poor quality.

Interesting you mention that because I am getting conflicting information from the Commander forum on which engine this is. I will take some better pix and post them.

I have a running 327F standard rotation that I will be removing from a restoration that I'm working on. Way too much engine for this boat. Good compression on all 8, appears to be complete including paragon.

Thats whats left of an F series engine. They came in 283 or 327. The exhaust manifolds are aftermarket. So are the risers. The obvious stuff thats wrong is carb, intake manifold, valve covers.

The good news is its easier to find the correct parts you need for the motor.

The easy way to tell what you have is the F series is flywheel aft and the Q series is flywheel forward. Since you have a harmonic balancer on the nose of the crank. That would make a F series.

Jim,
Thank you so much. So now that I know I have the incorrect engine I have to make the decision to make this one stock again or is the originality of the boat blown without the correct engine and I should find a QA? Or should I go balls out and install a 502? (just kidding) LOL.
This also brings up the question of exhaust manifolds, since they are shot I would like to find a set of originals rather than getting aftermarket. Do you know of a source?

When I was looking in the Chris Craft book. I thought I remember reading that the 23 commander could come with the 327 F or the 427.

The Barr replacement manifolds and risers are very close to the originals. you would just need to find the end plates and relief valve housings.

Jim Staib might have good used ones.

Get new exhaust manifolds and risers.....don't mess with any old/used stuff no mater how good it looks on the outside.....will bite you in the butt later...and maybe take the block too.
