OK, there is the finished product

Post by jbyers » Mon Aug 03, 2015 2:18 pm

After a rebuilt generator, starter, carburetor and fuel pump...... here is what she sounds like. I have the idle down to about 700 RPM's. Should I try for a slower idle?

Does the engine sound OK??

I guess you will have to cut and paste the youtube link. I don't know how to insert it correctly here.

Depending on what engine(s) you have 700 rpm is OK. Slower and the generator will not charge the battery. You asked in another post about a backfire. That is caused by unburned fuel. Possibly due the the timing being off slightly.

What engine do you have? Was it rebuilt?

Thanks Frank. It's a 58 Cavalier with a 95 HP K type engine. I doubt that it has ever been rebuilt. I replaced the plugs and wires and cleaned the points, had the generator and starter rebuilt and got a new voltage regulator and solenoid. I haven't tried to adjust the timing yet and can't see a timing mark on the flywheel. I guess I could just adjust it by ear as some people seem to prefer over a timing light.

Most likely that you won't find a timing mark on the flywheel. Find TDC as described in other posts and paint a mark on the flywheel and a fixed point on the flywheel housing. Use that as a reference and advance the timing to about 5 degrees before TDC with a timing light. I had a 95 HP K and it ran great there. Too much advance and you will hear the engine knock.

I set my idle at about 600 rpm. Also, make sure the the distributor is advancing the timing as the engine speed increases. That ca be checked with the timing light, too.
