Finding TDC with a '48 Chris Craft "k"

Post by Bluffpoint » Wed Jul 22, 2015 3:31 pm

I took my distributor out , marked the direction of the rotor, replaced the points with a Pertonix electronic ignition and when I went to slide the distributor back in, it didn't match up exactly (rut-row). Wouldn't start so I pulled it out and turned it a tooth. still nothing.
I need to match up my distributor to TDC on #1 and this motor has no timing marks. Any suggestion's?
Thanks
Tim

Top dead center is when the 4 bolts on the flywheel are horizontal like a rectangle. Do this in combination with your thumb on plug hole #1 to feel full compression because it could be bottom dead center. On my model 1947 K there is a small circle indent on the top of the flywheel but there is none on my 1942 K. Once you align that to plug #1 it should start and just use your ear to adjust timing after that.

When you do find it, do yourself a favor and put a mark on the flywheel with a scratch awl or some nailpolish. You never know when you will need to find it again someday!
