Twin 283 FWF Questions

Post by rstump » Sun Nov 13, 2011 1:57 pm

Went down to the marina yesterday to winterize and discovered that the starter for the port engine is locked up... won't turn at all. This is the same Prestolite starter I had rebuilt locally last summer.

I'm looking for a replacement starter so I can continue with the winterization before freeze-up. Obviously the starter has to come off either for repair (again) or replacement.

The question of the day is: twin 283H flywheel forward; port engine turns CCW (left) and starter turns CW (right) when viewed from the transmission?

Is this correct?

I know that this has been discussed many many times but I can't seem to find a clear answer with the search function.

The more I read the more confused I get.

The starter turns the opposite direction of the engine.

I suppose you tried the age old trick of hammering lightly on the starter as the ignition switch was activated?

Well, I got the starter off yesterday and opened it up this morning. A huge pile of debris fell out when I removed the end plate. It looks like a grenade went off inside this starter. It appears that the brush holder came loose and jammed into the commutator, ripping out several segments of the commutator.

Anyone know how the brush holder mounts in the starter shell? Looks line there are some empty screw holes in the shell and mangled shell holder.

Any suggestions on where am I likely to find parts for a Prestolite MDU-7033?

I've found a direct replacement ARCO locally.

A local starter/alternator rebuild shop ordered it for someone who never came back to pick it up. Been sitting on a shelf in it's original box for several years.

Anyone know anything, good or bad, about ARCO? Are these really new manufacture or are they REMANS?

Looks just like the Prestolite except for the color.

Gray instead of Black...

Rich, I have been using ARCO starters in modern boats for years with no problems. They have been in business since the 60's.
