Winterizing a KLC

Normally I just open the drains (block, water pump and at the lower end of the exhaust manifold) on a K engine but this one does not have a plug or petcock in the block behind the water pump. I think I will try connecting a hose to the water pump inlet and put the other end in a bucket of anti-freeze and run the engine until anti-freeze comes out the exhaust. I think people in the north do this all the time but I have never tried it. If this is a good plan, how much anti-freeze do I need?

That’s the way we do it in northern Michigan. We do not drain the water anymore because we have had too many problems over the years with rusted treads and it is hard to remove and reinstall the petcocks or plugs. We just use an extra gallon of antifreeze. We go through 6 gallons to make sure the block is clear of any water and running full antifreeze out the exhaust pipe.
