Hot K exhaust elbow

I have a newly rebuilt Model K engine. The first on water test the exhaust elbow was hot and bubbled the paint and had a burning smell. Water temp gauge showed in normal ranges. I have read this is normal but does anyone have a suggestion for ways to keep the exhaust elbow a little cooler? Thanks

Not unusual. The elbow will get pretty hot towards the flange at the manifold where the cooling water doesn’t reach. The burnt paint there does look unsightly but it’s normal. I have bronze replacement elbows which I leave unpainted, they gain a nice patina.

What Captain Nemo says is correct. You don't want water in that area as it may get in to the internal part of the engine.
