Loud valves, adjustment needed?

Post by joesoboti » Fri Jun 25, 2021 9:53 am

I've noticed a lot of rattling in the engine while under load which sounds like it could be valves tapping. However, there is no tapping at all in neutral at rpms up to 2,500 and more. It is very loud. Could this be valves or something more serious?

Check the timing?

Adding to the advice, recommend you investigate which valve(s) is/are suddenly making this noise. All of them? Just one side? I’d pull the cover(s) and check it out. Better yet, get a qualified mechanic to check it out at the dock. I hope it’s minor!

Will check timing to see if it is too far advanced as a first step.

Retarding the timing did the trick. Apparently the arrow on the block and the dimple on the flywheel are just 'suggestions' ! LOL

I found on my KL that the best timing adjustment is made while running the boat on the lake . Run up to cruising RPM ; I like 2500 RPM; and move distributor till get Max RPM. Runs great and get 3 gal/hour fuel economy.
