Anybody Recognize This?
Hi all. New to the forum. Picked up a barn find a year ago for basically nothing. 1951CC RR. Wife gets boat in divorce settlement. Transports from Sandpoint, ID to Astoria. She knows nothing about the boat, has title but no paperwork, nor any contacts. It’s Veterinary medicine for me. Trying to figure this thing out. Has not seen water in 12 yrs. First work is to get engine running. This boat has a conversion 400 ci SBC. Does anyone recognize this coupler/transmission? Trying to get info on it. The engine is reversed and the distributer mounts to the trans housing. See the numbers on the housing.

Try the photos again. They have to be small.

Ok there is a trick that I'm not seeing. Files are 2.8MB. Is that too large?
Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Could be. Go through the steps then press "Preview" If the photo does not show go back and try again.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
The numbers are for the rear motor mount. The reverse gear is a Paragon 2XE.
Another issue if it has been converted they/you have to drill the crankshaft to get oil pressure to the inside of the gear.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Yes. The distributer mounts to the bell housing of the transmission. An interesting finding is that the old Mallory distributer has had the bottom of the shaft where it would engage the oil pump drive cut off. Any idea why that would be? I do not see anything inside the transmission that would impact the drive.
Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Gives it a lower profile to clear the engine hatch.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Yes I understand that. That's not my question. The distributer is a standard Chevy Mallory street distributer. Only difference is this one has had the shaft cut off with an abrasive saw just below the gear drive. There does not appear to be a shaft length issue. That is, if the oil pump drive were still there it would not contact anything within the transmission. So why cut it off?
Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Runs off the end of the cam. Small gear with different size teeth.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
This is running off a gear drive in the transmission. The engine is reversed. The front of the engine is attached to the bell housing and transmission and faces aft. A std distributer drive for a SBC is on the back of the intake manifold and engages the gear drive on the back of the camshaft. That slot runs a mechanical tach drive on this setup. The gear drive on this distributer appears to be std chevy.

Definitely a weird set up. Can you tell me what parts book you are referring to? I called Paragon Power to get info. Parts guy there not helpful.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Different, Yes
However, Chris Craft built over 40,000 of the 283 flywheel forward engines between 1958-68
using this setup, apparently without any issues.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
oh yeah...I don't question the engineering...it works for sure...but this is not a transmission situation but a cam deal. Not only that we really don't have a "transmission" so much as a reverse gear...etc etc.
interesting setup for sure....John in Va.

Re: Anybody Recognize This?
Most likely a Sherwood. Remove the four 1/4-20 screws and the part number will be on the mating surface.
