KL Engine Running Hot

Post by Tmalko » Fri Jan 01, 2021 6:17 am

Manifold output running hotter on port side KL engine. Besides a possible water pump issue what other causes are possible and how would you isolate it?

You mention the port engine is running warm. How warm? Is there a noticeable difference in water output when they both run at idle?

It could also have some mud and rust blocking the water jacket too. It’s best to remove the manifold and take of the cap and exhaust elbow off, run a coat hanger thru and flush with water.
I would start with the water pump first. If it has a rubber impeller, it could be worn or missing some vanes.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Thanks for the responses. The temperature increases at a higher RPM and I saw about a 50 degree difference. The water pumps are the Sherwood type that you have to grease with the metal gear impeller. I’ve heard they are not efficient. That was my first suspect. I Like the coat hangar idea. Appreciate your time.

start with the pump....don't pull the manifold if you don't have to...

I'd start with a temp gun to make sure the gauges are accurate. Handy in the kitchen when this project is over. If they are accurate swap the water pumps. Remember that the inlet/outlet change with engine rotation.

Second on the infrared temperature gun. Can also be used to pinpoint hot spots on the manifold or head.
