K engine distributor shaft and oil pump

Post by rslingerland » Sat Sep 26, 2020 6:02 pm

Dear Reader,
I am attempting to install a refurbished distributor into a 1947 K engine powering a 1946 17' Deluxe runabout. My question concerns the mating of the distributor shaft with the spindle driving the oil pump. Is this a compression fitting with the distributor shaft expanding slightly as it slides down on the oil pump spindle, or should there be vanes on the oil pump spindle that slot into the slits cut into the base of distributor shaft? If the latter, then is it common for those vanes to be worn off, because I see none. Thanks for any insight anyone can offer on this matter.
Sincerely,
Rudy Slingerland

The lower end of the distributor should have a flat blade that is milled into the round shaft. The top of the oil pump has a slot that accepts the blade. The connection is a slip fit.

Thanks for your reply. Just to be clear--is the flat blade milled into the round shaft of the distributor? The two distributors I have have slots as if they receive a blade from the oil pump spindle. If the oil pump originally had fins, they're gone now, and I'm facing pulling the engine to replace the pump.
Thanks,
Rudy

On the K series engines the camshaft drives the oil pump. The distributor is driven by the same accessory drive that drives the water pump. The distributor in turn drives the tachometer cable.

Jim. Thanks for the rescue on that misinformation I gave. I'll spend the night in the anchor locker for my penance.
