1965 283 Spark Plugs and gap?

Post by edward.desimone » Wed Aug 26, 2020 10:52 am

Hey guys - I'm going to change the plugs in my 283. I believe it's a 1965...engine number is 829482. The plugs currently in there are autolite 303's. What are you guys using for plugs and is there a recommended gap for these motors? TIA

The original manual says UJ-6 at .028 gap. J-6 is probably the current replacement

In our family's old 63 31' Sea Skiff with the 283s in her, we ran AC R45S or R46S plugs depending on what we had on hand. The R46S were a little hotter plug which was more resistant to low speed fouling since we had about a 30-45 minute idle speed trip through the harbor out to the lake so the hotter plug was a little better, but the R45S plugs worked fine too.

This was with the original Prestolite distributors and and stock style coils and we just ran the CC factory gap of .028" like the manual states.
