Have a '56 Continental with a KL motor. Specs say 6 to 10 quarts oil. Dipstick shows full, but when I drain oil (including transmission) I only get about 5 quarts. I'm thinking the dipstick isn't accurate.
I don't want to run motor low on oil, but also don't want to hurt the motor by overfilling.
What is the first indication that crankcase is over full? Oil blow out dipstick? Thanks

I am no motor expert but something doesn’t ring true here. What is the source of the “specs” that suggest variable oil capacity from 6 to10 qts. ? I have a prewar ka and it has a 4 qt. capacity. The kL I believe is just a longer stoke version of the k. Maybe 5 sounds right. I can’t imagine a recommendation for variable oil capacity. I suppose I could be proven wrong, but ...

Re: KL oil quantity
Hi, The K’s in my cruiser take 5qts each. I think there were different oil pans which would account for the difference. I could measure one of my sticks for comparison.

Dipstick measurement would be helpful. Supposedly, Chris went to a "shallow" oil pan in 1956. I'm trying to find depth dimension on both pans to determine what I have. Mine is about 8 1/4" (exterior rail to bottom of pan. Not having any sucess.

Did you check the archives for an engine manual?

Mine are 1956. So probably a shallow pan. Get your measurement later 2day

The pan depth is the same as mine. The dip stick is about 13” to the top of the tube
