Generator on Model K
Hello - On the generator there is a unit that I do not know what you call. It has the point that closes and charges the battery. I have now had my boat in the water for 3 years & every year the unit fails. I can smell the electrical burn out smell when it fails. Can someone tell me what this would be happening? Is it possible the generator is producing to many amps for these units? Any input would be helpful. Picture attached.

It's called a Cut-Out. Post a photo of it. Some are known to have a short life.

What is under the tape on those wires ?
A poor connection could become unreliable with vibration etc.

Re: Generator on Model K
A couple of years ago my generator on my K got so hot you could fry an egg on it. Smoked and smelled nasty too. I was grateful nothing caught on fire. I took the generator in for a complete rebuild and has been fine since. Mike Murley in Fair Haven Mi. rebuilt it.

Hi - I am asking again about this because I went through another 3 "cut outs' this summer. All just fried. See picture of one of them attached. Generator was rebuilt when I restored the boat 3 seasons ago. Could I have a wire wrong? The end that burns out is the battery connection. Any idea? Thanks.

If nothing else seems to work just for information some install a diode under the cut out cover.Your generator man can do this.check with him.Jake
Re: Generator on Model K
Hello - I ended up having the generator rebuilt. Hopefully the issues with it will solve the problem. Thank you for everyones feedback. BUT...now I need to reinstall the generator. Are there any tricks to getting the belt tight enough? I put the one bolt in that it swivels then pulled up as hard as I could and tightened the bolt that slides. Is that the best I can do? Any other tricks? Thank you.
