Squeak in Chris-Craft K

Post by Bluffpoint » Wed Oct 16, 2019 7:09 pm

I was running our '48 Deluxe down Keuka Lake to pull it out for the season and I heard this squeak. I stopped, put it in neutral and still squeaked. Brought it home, hooked it up to the hose and squeak sounded like it was coming from the front of the motor, so I put a little dressing on the belt but to no avail. the generator was just gone through in July so I don't think its that ,and when I listened through the screw driver the squeak didn't resonate. I'm thinking now it may be inside. Any tricks I should know about to test specific areas and narrow this down. I appreciate the help. BTW I've owned this boat for 25 years, never rebuilt the engine, change the oil every fall, and drive it 3-4 times a week in the summer
Thanks
Tim

Probably worth temporarily removing the generator belt and then starting the engine to eliminate any belt or generator bearing noises.

Was it a rhythmic squeaking that increases with RPM or does it squeak at the same rate all the time?

A vacuum or exhaust leak can cause a whistle but different RPM would change that.

Thanks for the reply
I am going to remove the generator belt, that was next. After that I'm a little stumped without pulling the head.
It is rhythmic and follows the rpm, however not consistent. Some times it goes away for a little while .

You could try using a length of small diameter hose held up to your ear as you move it around the engine rather than the screwdriver method. Don't get it caught in the flywheel!

Dis-Connect the tachometer cable from under the distributor and see if it goes away.

How is your oil pressure ?

I hate to say this but it could be a dry bearing. Happened to me.
