Where to install new gas tank vent on '38 CC deluxe runabout

Am installing a new Rayco fuel tank in '38 CC deluxe runabout. Since there was no fuel vent other than the tiny hole in gas cap on original boat, is it better to add a thru hull vent and not rely on that tiny vent?. Hate to drill another hole in new varnish. And where is the best position if I do add it? I am thinking near transom on starboard side about a plank from sheer. This would avoid water sloshing up into vent while backing up if mounted on transom. Have not seen any pictures of vents on restored boats of this vintage. Is it even done?

I would vent as original using hole in cap. Just be sure hole has not been obstructed with debris or plating.

Ditto. It worked for 80 years the original way.

Thanks for the replies. I like the original way as long as it worked okay.

The original hole will do fine. Just run the same size drill bit through the hole to make sure its completely clear.
