Leaky water pump

I just fired up my "new to me" B engine and it runs fine but leaks from the point where the two flanges screw together. I opened it up and found the paper gasket broken in a few places. I added this Permatex to both flanges and stuck the paper gasket in place the best I could. I put the pump back on but it still leaks but not as badly. Are there new gaskets available or should I be using a different type of Permatex?

Hi Jim, Give Depco pump over in Florida a call, I've gotten gaskets from and a few parts from them as I was restoring one for a Kermath recently. They will need the serial number of the pump (stamped on a flange I think). I think these are an old Sherwood.
Put a caliper on the inside diameter of the press in sleeve bearings also, - they tend to go egg shaped over time and the lash between the gear lobes gets larger and looses suction. Re center the shafts with new Oilite bushings and they seem to work well again. The gaskets are very thin paper.

You can make new gaskets from lunch paper bags. The thickness is about the same as the original.

This may not work forever but works great today. Will have to observe for long time applications. No paper gasket at all.

If the mating surfaces are flat and true, use Permatex Ultra Black RTV... CQ
