Looking for a Key Blank for my ‘36 Runabout

Post by North Woody » Sat May 25, 2019 9:40 am

I’m hoping you guys can point me in the right direction on this one, as I’ve struck out finding a source on my own. I’m looking for additional keys for my 1936 CC 19’ Runabout as I only have a single key at the moment. The current key is stamped “ilco”, “Made in Canada”, with what looks like a reference number of 10408. The back side is blank. Here are a few pics of it:

The local Ace hardware store told me that these specialist boat keys are not made available to them, but they can cut one if I can get a blank. And the guys that service and store my ski boat said they didn’t have a source for these. Any chance you guys can point me in the right direction on this one? Thanks!

Is the lock a clum switch? I wrote a blog on all this several years ago here on research related. your best bet is probably old car shows as the clum was used in autos of the period, as well. al schinnerer of calif. classic boats makes clum switch reproductions and maybe his key blanks might work? i think there were about 96 different keys. the number should appear on the switch.

Do you have keys Jim?
I had my clum restored at Clawson Classic Instruments, he supplied the keys with it. He probably has them.

A lot of them. Not all. They were originally sold pre-cut. I have the blanks too but trying to see if I have an original. ALL of them are obsolete.

Super, thanks Jim. I missed this before we left the lake yesterday morning, so I'll have to take a look when we're back up there in 3 weeks. Thanks for the help and hopefully it matches something you've got!

Well, I finally remembered to take a picture of my key switch :). To my eye it looks like “98”, but it’s a bit hard to totally make it out. Here are a few pics to see if I’ve got the number right:

I believe the number is on the hull card, as well, if memory serves me correctly.
