Left home, returned home. Just out for a cruise on the local waters.

Note the swing bridge is manual. At the end of Vic's video you can see the attendant cranking it closed. 8)

I saw him there but I didn't know what he was doing. There are more of those manual bridges and locks than anyone would guess. Nice day for cruising!

I just rewatched all of your videos. What an exciting time for you all! Sandi's excitement was palpable. Great video. I see the Bridge Guy walking back & forth and I assume that he's somehow closing the Bridge. Does anyone know how that works?

I can see now that he's got some kind of shaft that inserts into the middle of the bridge. There must be a long handle attached to it and what I took for him walking back & forth is actually him walking in a circle cranking the bridge closed.

Bill you are exactly right. It is a long pole that works gears that rotate the bridge. Often times the operator will jog behind the pole building up momentum and then step away from the pole and the bridge will continue on it's own. It is fun to watch. :D

Since I have said I will keep up on the refreshing of American Beauty I guess it is time to do so.

This winter is more of a recovery year after blowing out the budget last year, however there are still things I am working on and getting accomplished.

Just yesterday I ordered Pertronix kits for both engines.

Today I got to spend some time with her removing the oil pressure gauges to get them redone. :D
Gaugesb4.jpg
Oil Pressure Gauges B4 rebuild.
I removed the upper rail in the stern to bring it home for some new varnish.
unnamed.jpg
I am also varnishing some of the interior parts. I am using Pettit Captains Satin for the first time. I find it to be very different than anything I have ever used before and do not know yet if I am going to like the satin finish. :? Any opinions on this stuff?

Troy,

I would think that you'd want to use as high a gloss as possible for the exterior. Because of its weathering characteristics. I've only ever used Satin on interior features.

Yes Bill! Sorry I didn't make that clear. I am using the satin on the interior. I use Pettit Flagship on the exterior.

Troy, I know what you mean about the satin finish. It can come out looking a little cloudy. I've been a restoration contractor for 30 years and we've used a lot of antique pine flooring on our jobs. My third generation floor finish guy starts with a coat of high gloss and then finishes with two coats of satin. Gives it a nice dull glow and looks great . I'm going to refinish my main stateroom this Spring. I don't want to get into the stain, so I'll just dust it off with 220 , one coat of gloss, one coat of satin. Try it on something small before you go for it. Make sure it gives you the look you want.

Let me turn that around and ask the question. Theoretically a Satin finish should adhere better for subsequent coats, regardless of scuffing between coats. Does it make any sense to build with Satin and then finish w/gloss if gloss is what you're after? I've always used the same varnish start to finish.

I think the idea of gloss undercoat is to bring out and highlight the wood tone and the satin overcoat lets some of the sheen come thru without the stark brightness of a gloss coat finish. Probably more like a semi-gloss but a little softer.

If you're doing this would you still scuff between coats?

I haven't tried this varnish method on the CC yet, but have been doing it on all kinds of wood flooring for many years with excellent results. It might be the way CC did interiors originally. My floor finisher does a really light sand with a 3M pad attached to an orbital sander prior to satin finish. Just enough to knock off any bumps. The results are a soft rich toned sheen. A solid satin finish can tend to look a bit dull and flat. The gloss coat just kicks it up a bit. The finishes used are oil based polyurethane. I plan on trying it on a small area to make sure it's compatible with original finish before I commit to it. Joanroy's locked up in cold storage, so no varnishing for me until Spring. Can't come soon enough!

Bill:
I would not build with satin and finish with gloss because as you point out the satin has very little UV protection and part of the reason for multiple coats is better UV protection.

I like the idea of gloss under satin. Will have to try that.

I just went to a seminar at our SE MI Chpt. ACBS winter mtg. and listened to a presentation by a refinisher with 30 yrs. experience with Boats. She uses nothing other than Epifanes products. So I visited Epifanes website. They actually recommend using the Gloss under the Satin. They also have Rapid products that can be coated over quickly including some that can be recoated without sanding between. They refer to their satin finish product as a Rubbed Finish look. They use the same language to describe the U.V. Protection of their Satin as they do their Gloss. Their products have come so highly recommended that I think I'll give them a try.

We've been using Interlux paints and I like those but haven't settled on any particular brand of Varnish. After a lot of switching streams between finish & Oil we have finally settled on keeping our Teak decking in Oil.

I too have heard great things about Epifanes.

Was actually given a can last year at one of our Cobbossee Rendezvous by the local rep. Have been trying to figure out where to use it.

I always end up coming back to the advice of so many experienced craftsman "If you have a product that works well for you and you are happy with the results, stick with it and don't mess with it."

Very sound advice I'd say. Try out that can on something isolated like your Forward Hatch or the Salon Companionway Hatch or Door. That's quite the crew there in the picture. These Native American names need to come with Pronunciation Guides. Is it; Co-boss-ee, or Co-bo-see? Or something else? I just learned a few months ago how to say Ho-pat-cong!

I am not an English major for I have a little trouble breaking down words, but it seems like your second choice is the best one.
Co-bo-see, however I have heard a few people pronounce it Co-boss-ee. That always make me chuckle inside.

To make matters worse the real full name is Lake Cobbosseecontee. Co-bo-see-con-tee.

If I understand it correctly it is an Indian name that means Sturgeon Lake, or Lake of Sturgeon. I guess before dams were put in the Sturgeon would swim up river into the lake.

Here is a little article on our operating light house.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladies_Delight_Light

As far as the Epifanes goes I think I will try it on something completely separate. Maybe the paddle for Yorktown. 8)

Yes, that was our biggest Rendezvous to date, and that picture was just the captains.

Here is the whole gang from that day.

Of course now that I have taken my stanchions apart to varnish the wood I can not bring myself to put them back together without repainting them.

They are currently a brass/bronze color. I think Sandi and I are figuring out which one we like best, but what are your thoughts on these three choices for stanchion colors? :?

On my 1960 they are Chrome but the pipes are painted white. I'm partial to the chrome and second choice would be nickel. But I would do whatever was original.

Troy,
Great to see American Beauty, a fine example from the ANE, featured in the Brass Bell. Woody CC cruisers are pretty rare here on the east coast. Seems to be a lot more survivors in the PNW. I know what you mean when you say we don't find the boat it finds us.
Same kinda thing happened to me. Anyway, I'm hooked now! but it's a healthy addiction. Great story! Varnish On!

But as you know there are those jerks that are envious of a fine vessel like "American Beauty" and must throw out covetous remarks.

Troy,
I truely enjoyed your article in the new The Brass Bell. And, I'm so happy that the 36-foot bull-Bose Connie found you and Sandi. She certainly lives up to her name; she is truely an American Beauty. Great story Troy & Sandi. See you soon!
